WiFi connecting to open networks

I have my WiFi “auto connect” disabled and WiFi disabled through control center but it will still auto connect to McDonalds or terrible public wifi for no reason.

I don’t want the phone to connect to these because it gets confused by essentially connecting to a null network since the device doesn’t auto authenticate via 802.1x

Also, these AP’s track mac address connections and device names. So basically they know phone names w/ mac repeatedly connecting to restaurants wifi.

Why does this keep happening? It’s so bad.

It will connect to networks that it has connected to in the past, so when it does tap on the i next to the network name and Forget This Network.

And the Wi-Fi button in the Control Center does NOT turn off Wi-Fi; it just disconnects from the network it is currently connected to, but leaves Wi-Fi on. To turn off Wi-Fi go to Settings/Wi-Fi and turn it off there. But be aware that if you do that then Find My will not work reliably except outdoors with a clear view of the sky, as it will depend entirely on GPS satellites, which cannot be detected indoors.

No, they don’t, because your phone lies about the MAC address when detected by an access point. And it tells a different lie for each network.

What you can do is Open Settings

  • Tap General
  • Tap Transfer or Reset Phone
  • Tap  Reset
  • Tap Reset Network Settings

This will forget ALL networks, you can then log in to only those networks that you want to join.

Curious, is there documentation about mac spoofing?

Putting a wireless nic into promiscuous mode you can clearly see your phone’s mac and device name on the load out.

You phone’s beacons to attempt to connect to known aps can actually be picked up if you filter for them.

Thank you for the tip about resetting wireless networks. Will this prevent it from trying to connect to unknown/never before connected to AP’s such as a restaurant while sitting in Drive Thru?
