The converter is part of Pages, and applies to a Word document being opened in Pages. As such, it's a 'one-at-a-time' process—opening the Word doc in Pages translates the opened .doc into a Pages document. Saving that Pages document creates a new .pages file with the same name (unless you have changed it), but a different tag from the Word original.

Bulk conversions are not directly supported, but might be achievable using an Applescript to do the user's part of the job.

I've sent a request for scriptors interested in your issue.

Just understand that Pages is not a Word clone and many features potentially found in a Word document have no Pages counterpart. That means that upon opening a Word document, the Pages translation may fail; drop the unsupported Word content, or perform automatic text replacement if the font reference in the Word document is not physically installed on the Mac. If Pages determines that the Word document is too old to process, then it will throw a dialog that interrupts processing, and that makes it hard to automate inbound Word document processing.

Apple does not guarantee the accuracy of these document translations, nor can any third party tool that purports to do Word to Pages conversions. The latter may generate a Pages document that Pages deems damaged, or that is full of individual text boxes that may cost hours to correct.

The AppleScript code to open a Word document in Pages and then save it as a Pages document is trivial but the error handling and how the code is implemented may make it much harder to control.
