how do you delete an imap account from iphone 6 ios 12
Reading other posts with instructions they say to select passwords and accounts, then select the account to delete and hit the delete button but there is no delete button or option listed

There is no delete option because the same email is used as your Apple ID.
Settings > Mail > Accounts > "Sign Out" at the bottom of that email account.
