External Drive Not Showing Up Unless Connected To USB Dongle

I have a MacBook 18,1 with Monterey 12.6.3. When I connect my external drive to the computer using type-c to type-c, the device would appear and then stopped working. On subsequent connections, the device does not show up for use. It shows up greyed out in disk utility, but fails to mount.

When I use the external drive with my MOKiN usb dongle (Amazon - for reference, not affiliate), the drive shows up consistently. Has anyone seen this issue?

You connect your drive directly to a USB port with a USB cable, and it is flaky.

You connect it to a POWERED dock, and it is stable.

take a look at how much power it demands, and how much is available:

 Menu > About this Mac > (System Report) > USB
