What is error code C000022?

HP printer said new cartridges needed, but then printer reported new cartridges were damaged or missing. Went online to HP Instant Ink chat, told to reinstall printer drivers, got error code C00022 and then support staff from HP (?) did a remote access to my computer and said numerous programs were accessing my computer leading. to identity theft. They wanted $249 to fix! Internet show that error code as a Windows thing. What is error code C0000022 on the Mac?

Support staff from "HP"? How did you get in contact with these "support staff" at "HP" for the call where they said this? Did you contact them at a number that you know belongs to Hewlett-Packard? Or did they call you – claiming to be from HP?

If the latter, the call very likely was not from HP, but from criminals "phishing" for victims (like you) to scam. For scam calls, the claim that "numerous programs were accessing [your] computer leading to identity theft" would be a pure lie meant to frighten you into acting without thinking. (Unless, the criminals were referring to something that THEY were putting onto your computer, using remote access software they had frightened you into installing.).

Thank you for responding. I initiated the contact to the Instant Ink online chat at HP (via my login to my HP account) and that went well until the printer message was that I needed to re-install the printer driver. When the error message came, there was a new HP chat window with a referral made to a technician. So if there was a scammer they have a direct link to the HP chat line. The error code appeared from the attempt to install the new printer software, unfortunately the link for that software was odd. But back to my original question: is there an error code C0000022?

I suppose the printer message that I needed to install the printer driver cold have been the first scammer contact? My printer is Internet connected for the HP Instant Ink program

I don't know what that error code is.

If the contact was directly from HP, them presumably it was from someone real, rather from some "phishing" criminal. But I'd still be suspicious of the claim that numerous programs were accessing your computer, leading to identity theft. How would they know? Was that for real, or just part of a canned pitch to get you to buy some security software that you might not need?

I don't know the answer, but something still doesn't seem right.
