iPhone automatic App Updates not working

It seems like ages now that I have had to have been manually updating apps despite having the automatic update option turned on. I have made several attempts to resolve this with the apple help desk, but they seem unable to work out what the issue is.

I wondered if anyone else has had this problem and resolved it.

Things Ive tried with Apple support :

1) Log out of App Store log back in. Restart Phone

2) check for latest IOS update

3) Make sure payment option is a valid card

4) Make sure I can manually update apps

5) Check for VPS on phone

6) Check Time Zone

The latest solution from Apple was to Delete the app and re-install the app.... REALLY !!! of course this will update it to the latest version, but you can't be expected to that every time.

Yesterday ( 07/09/2023) I had 38 apps that had not updated a few of them over 5 days old !!!

Do auto updates happen at a particular time. ? Does the phone need to be charging ? Auto update is set for Wifi only

Any help would be appreciated but im resigned to manually updating apps at the moment. Which seems wrong !!!!

The issue is still not solved. Everytime I go to App Store I see not updated apps. I have to refresh it manually and tap on "Update all". Automatic updates option is on!

This is still an issue, A HUGE ISSUE FOR US! We have been rolling out a meeting app for our annual meeting, next week. We've had several updates over the past few weeks to fix little bugs and tweaks. The only way we can get our app to update automatically is to uninstall it and reinstall it.

I came on here to find a solution. I thought it was an issue with our app, but it appears to be something bigger.

I’ve been dealing with this for a few years now on multiple devices: iPhone X, iPhone 13, the last two generations of iPad, Watch 7 & 8, and now my Vision Pro. As much money as they charge us (and we keep mindlessly buying) you’d think that something as simple as making sure auto-updates work would have been squashed as soon as it appeared… yet here we are, years later. My confidence in Apple has been wavering for a while, and while this isn’t going to be the straw that breaks the camel, it is adding to the haystack. Not impressed.

That SOUNDS good, except somehow Google is able to avoid this problem with all of their apps on millions of different devices (of all different brands) all over the globe, and their servers aren't overwhelmed. It also doesn't explain why system OS updates aren't happening automatically either on iOS. I need to manually check for available updates and then need to install them manually.

Not certain this will help but…..

under settings then App Store ….

download over cellular is on

app downloads set to always allow. Many if not most apps are greater than 200MB

i am uncertain here but perhaps when the auto update comes across an app greater than 200 MB the entire process stops. That is to say that it will not look to the next app to update even if it is less than 200 MB

It’s 2024 and still having this issue. Automatic app updates are toggled on in Settings > App Store > App Updates but apps will not automatically update. I have to go into the App Store and manually update apps from there. This is definitely a bug that seems to affect a wide number of Apple devices across many generations. It doesn’t seem to matter if your device is up-to-date on its latest software release.

It would be really nice to have some sort of acknowledgment from Apple’s side that they are even aware of this issue.

I have answer for you: the apple does this on purpose so you keep thinking going to App Store over and over and hopefully one day you just finally buy their advertised stuff nobody otherwise cares about on the front page.😂

also Apple never ever ever fixed that new AirPods stop music when you receive text message on a freaking silent mode or do not disturb. It literally stop playing with every and each text.

i don’t understand how they don’t have their **** together with stuff that should be already functional

Lastly, he stated that apps could take up to 6 weeks. to update automatically, once a new version is released to the App Store by the developer. I don't believe this to be true.

Believe it or not, this is the only honest answer you've got that could have saved a lot useless troubleshooting.

It's nearly impossible for Apple to handle all the required bandwidth necessary to auto update all the apps inside all the devices around the world instantly.

Even Google is using the same tactic with the Google Play Store, because the volume of data and bandwidth required is even bigger in their case.
