Walking steadiness measure on iPhone

How does iPhone differentiate between phone in hand, phone in purse, phone in pants pocket, phone in housecoat or apron pocket, slowly stepping/moving during yard work, steadywalking 100 ft to and from my mailbox, and riding a bumpy bus ❓ (I have had steps recorded for several miles/days on a bus trip❗️) Yard work is mostly very uneven movements. So how accurate is the “walking steadiness” measure❓

The accuracy of the walking steadiness measure on the iPhone 14 Plus with iOS 16 has not been officially validated by Apple. However, a study published in the journal JMIR mHealth and uHealth in 2022 found that the measure was generally accurate in detecting people with poor walking steadiness. The study found that the measure had a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 78%, meaning that it was able to correctly identify 86% of people with poor walking steadiness and 78% of people with normal walking steadiness.

The study also found that the walking steadiness measure was more accurate in people who were older and in people who had a history of falls.

It is important to note that the walking steadiness measure is not a diagnostic tool. If you are concerned about your walking steadiness, you should see a doctor for a complete evaluation.
