iPad Pro 6th Gen - Microphone distorted when on call, but fine when recording

I have an iPad Pro 6th Gen.

I ran into this weird issue where when I record a video through the camera app / voice recording through the voice memo app / any voice message on iMessage, Discord, and other messaging app, the voice is perfectly fine and clear.

However, the moment I hop on to a call on FaceTime, Discord, or any other messaging app, the audio becomes incredibly distorted and it just sounds like I’m in a wind tunnel.

I have a screen protector that has the entire top bar (selfie camera) exposed, I have DBrand skin on the back of my iPad. It seems like voice recording and live calls use different microphone sets? I am confused, please help!

Your iPad Pro has a five microphone array - different microphones being used in different circumstances.

Microphones are positioned thus:

  • one microphone on the front of the iPad - positioned immediately adjacent to the camera located centrally on the top-edge (when viewed in portrait orientation) of the screen bezel.
  • two microphones centrally in the top (when viewed in portrait orientation) short-edge of the iPad casing.
  • one microphone centrally in the long-edge of the iPad casing - on the opposite side to the Apple Pencil charging dock and physical volume buttons.
  • one microphone on the rear of the iPad - adjacent to the LiDAR sensor.
