iPad 5th Generation Microphone Issue: Clear Video Audio vs. Muffled Voice Memos

I’m having a frustrating microphone issue on my iPad 5th generatio. When recording videos using the Camera app or any app directly connected to it, the audio is clear and of high quality. However, when using apps like Voice Memos, Snapchat, Roblox voice chat or any application not directly linked to the Camera app, the recorded audio is extremely quiet and muffled. The only time the sound gets clear is when I tap on the iPad, and even then, only the tapping noise sounds clear, not my voice. All my voice memo recordings come back faint and muffled, no matter how I record them.

Your iPad has multiple microphones - each being used with different Apps.

Have you placed the iPad in a fitted case? Some third party cases may obstruct one or more of the iPad’s microphones. If the iPad is in a case, remove it - and then test with the Apps causing difficulties.

Similarly, have you fitted a screen protector? Some models of iPad have a forward-facing microphone adjacent to the camera situated within the screen bezel. If the screen protector covers the camera, it will also likely cover the associated microphone. If applicable, remove the screen protector.

Otherwise, you would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:

Thanks for the suggestions. I don’t use a case so I know that’s not the problem, and the screen protector has been on since before the issue started and it used to work. Noted It’s just been slightly peeling at the corners recently, so I removed it for a bit to test to see the difference, but there is none. I want visiting the Genius Bar at the Apple Store to be my last option. Is that really all I can do on my own?
