I've just heard a recommendation to upgrade to Ventura 13.5.2. However my laptop is very old (MacBook Air, mid 2013) and the latest operating system the computer shop could put on it last time was Big Sur 11.7.9.
Is it necessary/possible to upgrade it please (and if so, how)? I already have ticked the box that allows automatic upgrades.

I have the same exact MacBook as well! Unfortunately macOS Big Sur is the latest version of macOS you can install on that machine. If you are still unsure about what is the latest macOS update you can install, you can power off your MacBook, hold Option Command R, all at the same time, and power it back on. Make sure to hold these keys down until it either shows you a globe, or the Apple Symbol. This will boot you into macOS Recovery, but with the latest macOS version you can run on your MacBook. Once you see a menu, one of the options will say, “Install macOS Big Sur” (for example). If it does say, “Install macOS Big Sur,” it means that you cannot run an updated version of macOS. If it says otherwise, like “Install macOS Monterrey,” then you will be able to update your MacBook. After you are done in the recovery menu, bring your mouse to the top left corner of the screen, click on the Apple Symbol, and click restart. Going into macOS Recovery will NOT wipe any data from your MacBook.

Your device is too old to run the newest MacOS.
