is there a way to sort chart data series in Numbers?

I would like to be able to modify the chart below so that the x-axis is sorted in descending order.

I would prefer not to sort the data in the table itself, would rather modify the chart.

Is it not possible to modify the term in data series [Table 1::C69:O69] using a formula to sort?

many thanks

Often sorting the data table is the most efficient approach....

Have a look at the 'Charting Basics' template at File > New in your menu.

If you click a column in the column chart on the first sheet you will notice you can change the order of the columns by changing the value in the Order dropdown.

You could click on each column and change the order until you have what your want.

But you can't do that with the bar chart on the right of that sheet.

Note the difference lower left - 'Plot Rows as Series' vs. 'Plot Columns as Series'.

If you change the bar chart on the right to Plot Rows as Series you can manually change the order there too.

Hi SaltSeaShark,

I assume that student names are the x-axis and scores are the y-axis.

What I am thinking is copy Table 1::A69:O69 and paste on a blank part of the sheet to create a new table. And perhaps copy and paste the names into a Header Row of the new table. Then you can do Menu > Table > transpose Rows and Columns. Then you can sort the new table, without changing Table 1. Use that new table as the data for the graph (chart).

We are not looking over your shoulder. We can not see what you see!

Please post a screen shot of the relevant part of your Table 1. For privacy, hide names or make dummy names.

Regards,

Ian.
