Typically a sudden drop in battery charge like that indicates a hardware failure with the battery. In my experience when the battery charge level gets near that point, it may be possible to have the Battery condition show up as "Service Recommended", but it may be easier to check the condition immediately after powering the laptop back on after the sudden power off while the Battery charge level is below the point where the sudden power off occurred.

It never hurts to check the Battery condition in macOS at other points, but if the condition is "Normal", then checking at lower charge levels may allow you to prove that the condition changes to "Service Recommended". The Battery condition can be accessed in the Battery System Preference/Settings, or by Option-clicking the battery icon on the menu bar. If no battery condition is listed on the menu bar, then it is considered to be "Normal".

You can also try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't always reveal any problems. Also, the best time for the diagnostics to show a problem is when the battery charge level is low such as when you begin to charge the laptop immediately after the sudden power off. Unfortunately in some cases, just the act of charging the battery can quickly change the condition of the battery.

Sometimes the Apple Service Diagnostics may be able to detect some failing batteries better than the macOS battery condition or Apple consumer diagnostics won't detect.
