text is replaced with boxes with question mark

Mac mail and other applications are replacing text (or font) with squares with question marks. How to fix?

We have a great support article that might help with this. Please take a look at it here: Restore fonts that came with your Mac using Font Book - Apple Support. Follow this guidance:


      1. "In the Font Book app  on your Mac, choose Font Book > Settings.
      2. Click Advanced, then click Reset Fonts.
      3. Click Proceed to confirm, and enter your password if asked (or use Touch ID).

Any fonts you’ve installed are placed in /Library/Fonts (Removed) or in ~/Library/Fonts (Removed). To install those fonts again, just reinstall them."
