Macbook Air stops playing all media

I think it's similar to this issue which was unresolved.

Macbook Pro suddenly stopped playing all … - Apple Community

Not an obvious problem like a browser setting or sound setting. The issue affects playback of ALL media whether it's in the browser, in Quicktime, in VLC. While watching a video (normally a youtube video, the sound will suddenly cur out).

Once this happens the machine will no longer play any media files. Whether it's in the browser, or quicktime, or VLC, or Safari, or Chrome... won't play videos anywhere on the machine until you do a reboot.

I'm using a 2014 Macbook Air. BigSur 11.7.9

To avoid the question / answer and question answer scenario

Suggest the User start with Points 1 to 4 and then Test

Still having issues, move onto Steps 5 and 6 and Test Again

Still no resolve - move onto Step 7 and follow instructions therein

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

7 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Potentially found something. I had my sound output set to multi-output device in order to do screen recording with audio.

Video bug appeared just a minute ago and I switched the sound output to internal speakers and videos started playing again!

I need to test again next time the problem occurs to see if this is a fix. Or maybe I fixed it and will never see that problem again.

Try running Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. If there are any unfixed errors listed, then try running First Aid while booted into Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R), otherwise you will need to perform a clean install of macOS by first erasing the whole physical SSD (Intel Macs only) followed by reinstalling macOS & restoring from a backup.

You may also want to try rebuilding the Spotlight Index since one of the error logs in the EtreCheck report referenced an issue with Spotlight.

A - Thank you again for the Report.

A - The finding below are mostly related to the Age Of this computer and the Hardware it has configured and not so much the Software

Q - Runtime: 5:22

Q - Performance: Below Average

A - The above results are a Tip Off.

A - This light weight Application Etrecheck should not take this long to run “ Runtime: 5:22 “

Major Issues:

Q - Obsolete hardware - This computer may be considered obsolete.

A - Although the machine is functioning,  at a reduced Performance Level - think the Users Expectations are much greater than this 2014 MacBookAir with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB Internal Drive can reasonable handle

A - Perhaps your needs have grown and it is time to consider a New or Newer Computer .

Q - SSD too slow - SSD is showing poor performance.

Q -  disk0 - APPLE SSD TS0128F 121.33 GB (Solid State - TRIM: Yes)

Q -  Size: 120.99 GB

Q -  Free: 28.45 GB

Q -  Available: 30.22 GB

Q -  Low disk space - This computer is running low on free hard drive space.

A - All the above is evidence of the Age and Wear this computer has experienced over the years

A - It is generally a good computer practice to alway keep at least 15% to 20% of the Total Drive Capacity’s as Empty Space. Allowing the computer to drop below these guidelines may eventually, cause unintended consequence

A - Also, when the computer is Performing Slowly - it can be a indicator of a Lack Of Empty Spaces on the Drive.

A - In which case, it is searching for Empty Space to save all the Changes the user is performing.

Q -  High battery cycle count - Your battery may be losing capacity.

Q - Battery: Health = Normal - Cycle count = 1023

A - Batteries are considered Consumable Products. Over time it will degrade to a point where it needs to be replaced. The usage is normal as the capacity will go up and down all the time and never stay always at 100%. Apple Batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles and / or 80% Capacity before needing Evaluation or replacement.

Q -  No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found.

A - Suggest making a Time Machine Backup  before doing anything else

A - Right now, all your Personal Data that can or can not be replaced is in peril of being lost forever

Good work on the Sound Issue 👍

Though, it still remains the other more serious issues outlined in a earlier posting

FYI - the current version of Big Sur is now 11.7.10 which will probably be the Last Security Updated to be offered for Big Sur plus the Safari 16.6.1 update too

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and ran EtreCheck and attached the log.

Just to make sure nothing jumps out right away. I'm going to test safe mode and dummy account to see if the problem persists but it will take a while because it occurs randomly. Usually every 2 days so it's hard to know if something fixed it or not.

I did already try a quick safe mode to normal boot and that didn't seem to fix it.
