Trade in - how does it work

We have 2 x iPhone 13 mini’s 128GB, 1 iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB and an iPad 9th Gen. I want to trade them all in to get 2 x iPhone 15’s, but I need to hold on to the two 13 mini’s until the two iPhone 15’s arrive. I need to also hold on to the 14 Pro Max until my 15 Pro Max arrives.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

You can trade ONE device towards another device. If you have more devices you want to trade, you can trade in other items in return for an Apple Gift card, which you can use to purchase other items.

In terms of returning the phone. You return the phone AFTER you've received your new phone. Apple sends a trade-in box you can ship the old phone in (you'll have 14 days from receipt to send it in), or you can stop by your closest Apple Store after you've received your new phone and turn in the trade to get your credit there.

You NEVER have to send a trade in until AFTER you have received the new phone. That' means you keep the 14 Pro Max and one of the iPhone 13 Mini and use them as you have, until you get the new phone, then you send the trades and once received, your trade credit is deducted from the full price of the phone. You'll be charged up front the full price of the phones. The trades will be deducted from the payment card you used after the trade has been received and verified.

This is a shady area and one where I'd recommend you speak with Apple directly about using a gift card as partial payment for an iPhone, which you are also using a trade towards.

If you're in the US, you can call Apple at: 800-MY-APPLE

I can't give you a definitive answer on this as we are all users here on this user to user only forum. And if I give you a false assumption, I'm not helping you too much. Ask Apple directly.

@lobstersghost1 so, let’s say I trade the 14 pro Max toward one of the iPhone 15’s - I get £715 credit and problem solved for one iPhone 15.

For the other iPhone 15, I would need to trade 1x iPhone 13 mini’s against the purchase (£300), but the other 1x iPhone 13 mini and the iPad would need to be traded in for a Apple Gift Cards (totalling £415), but, I’m assuming I will not receive the gift card until Apple has received and verified the devices? As such, I have to send one of the iPhone 13’s in first?

You want to tie a device to a purchase. And as I told you, you can only trade ONE device towards one phone. You want to buy two phones. But you have 3 phones and an iPad you want to trade. So yes, if you want to trade a phone towards a new phone, you'll have a device tied to a trade in. And if you want to buy two phones, you'll have two devices tied to two device purchases. That leaves another phone and an iPad you can't actually use to trade towards either iPhone. So I suggested trading them in to Apple, which won't be tied to any purchase and Apple will give you a gift card.

The question is whether you can use the gift card as partial payment for either of the phones you want to purchase, knowing each of the phones you want to purchase will have a trade tied to them. That's where you need to ask Apple.

I don't know if I can be any more clear?

Thanks

Yes - iPhone 15 one

trade in 14 Pro Max

iPhone 15 two

trade in IPhone 13 mini 1

gift card iPhone 13 mini 2

gift card iPad

so, as you can see, to get iPhone 15 two, I cannot see any other way but to send 1x 13 mini and the iPad to first get the gift card.

or, as you said earlier, go into store for that one ?

Apologies, I’m confused about the gift card part. To get the gift card, so that it contributes towards the balance of one of the phones, so I need to send one mini and iPad BEFORE I order the 15? I get that I won’t have to send the 14 Pro Max or one of mini’s in, but thinking I can’t get around for the other mini and it has to go in first to

get the Gift Card.

I haven’t got any items tied to a trade in. I last did this with three Apple Watches (but was in store, so they took Apple Watch 5, and 6 gave me a gift card, took Apple Watch 6 as the trade in on the Ultra and then applied the gift card - so I ended up paying very little). It didn’t matter as I didn’t need the devices at the time. This time, I ideally need to keep all of the current phones until the news ones arrive - but looking highly unlikely that this will be possible.
