Issue Tagging Files - The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8076).

More and more macOS is becoming like a dysfunctional Windows operating system. This problem has existed for a very long time now. The issue is repeatable - but no one cares. Anyway, it goes like this. I add a new tag to a file and I start getting these lame messages:

The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8076).

It sort of seems like if you add a new tag you must wait for a time before continuing to navigate or doing anything in Finder - otherwise you get the popup message informing you that your operating system is dysfunctional.

This is extremely annoying because when I'm tagging files in various directories - I can't simply add many tags to many files and navigate as one would normally do without this stupid, cryptic, message popping.

I've always hated Windows operating systems - for inane stuff just like this.

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I strongly suspect that the operating system is the problem. No, I don't have any funky "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", or anti-virus on my system. I never install junk software onto my computer (that garbage is for Windows) - pretty much it's all Apple software or very mainstream/professional software. I do have a VPN though. But, I never had any issue like this until the operating system was upgraded.

Here's some food for thought: unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Former Malware Distributor Kape Technologies Now Owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, Zenmate, and a Collection of VPN “Review” Websites

Also many user have reported that their VPN affected their system's performance.
