How to download catalina to a 2012 macBook Pro running OSX 10.8.5

I have been given a 2012 MacBook Pro which is running MacOSX 10.8.5.

The processor is 2.5 GHz Intel Core 15

I would like to update it to run Catalina.

Can anyone let me know how to do this?

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for a higher OS. Since you're on 10.8.5, you'll need to go through an intermediate one.

Catalina and above won't run 32-bit software; use Go64 as well.
