My Apple Pencil 2nd gen is paired with my iPad Air. However, it randomly stops working, even if it is charged.

Forgetting and pairing again didn’t solve the problem. Updating the iPadOS didn’t either. Restarting and rebooting doesn’t work.

The only way I can work through this problem (which doesn’t make it stop happening! I want it to stop happening.) is:

  • Attaching my pencil to the ipad
  • Wait until the “Apple Pencil” pop-up is fading in and out (obs: it doesn’t show the battery status, but I know it is fully charged).
  • Restart the iPad.

Those steps, most of the time, make me able to use my Apple Pencil once more. However, it’s really demanding.

I went to a certified apple support store and they said there was nothing wrong with the iPad.

Hello patríciaponciano,

If there isn't anything wrong with the iPad, then there may be an issue with the Apple Pencil itself.

Can you isolate the issue further by testing it with another iPad? Does the issue also occur with other iPad? If so, then the issue is with the Apple Pencil and may require a replacement.

We see you already checked out the resource titled Pair Apple Pencil with your iPad. Make sure you've covered all of these steps:

If your Apple Pencil won't pair with your iPad

1. Connect your Apple Pencil to your ipad:

* With Apple Pencil (2nd generation): Center your Apple Pencil on the magnetic connector, which is on the side of your iPad with the volume buttons.

* With Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (6th through 9th generations): Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad.

* With Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (10th generation): Remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil and a USB-C cable into the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter. Plug the other end of the cable into your iPad.

2. Restart your iPad, then try to pair again.

3. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.

4. On the same screen, find your Apple Pencil under My Devices. If you find it, tap Information icon. Then tap Forget this Device.

5. Connect your Apple Pencil into your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds.

6. If the Pair button doesn't appear, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until the Pair button appears.

7. If the Pair button still doesn't appear, contact Apple Support.

If the issue happens with multiple iPads or after the steps above, then we'd recommend contacting Apple Support for your service options: Get Support They will take it from here.

Take care.
