iPod Classic (original, not refurbished)

A few months ago, there was a fault

whilst charging - it instantly drained the battery and then showed a

very small icon instead of the battery icon.  It eventually charged, but

didn't play properly. I checked the stats and there were 8 pending

sectors.  I erased and did a FAT 32 format, which reduced the pending

sectors back to zero.

The

thing is, now it has started freezing inbetween and sometimes during

songs.  Also it makes a scratching noise and vibrates slightly when

switching functions.  Sometimes just turning off and on again

temporarily solves it, or doing a menu/centre button reset (although

this resets any shuffled playlists).

It's

about 15 years old and has been used regularly - is there a long-term

way to repair it, or is it coming to the end of its life?  Stats as

follows:

Retracts: 19

Reallocs: 1608

Pending Sectors: 0

PowerOn Hours 132 (although I think it's played many more hours)

Start/Stops: 37298

Temp Current: 26c

Temp Min: 7c

Temp Max: 55c

Windows, Windows 10

Howdy ladino1968,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. It sounds like your iPod Classic isn’t working and we will help get you to the right place for answers. At this point, your device would be considered obsolete and service would be very limited, if any.

About obsolete products
Products are considered obsolete when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago. Monster-branded Beats products are considered obsolete regardless of when they were purchased.
Apple discontinues all hardware service for obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products. Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period for up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.
Find out which products are obsolete:
Mac
iPod
iPhone
iPad
Beats
