iMac won't recognize keyboard or mouse

My one-year old iMac will not connect to the mouse or keyboard. On start up it shows a cursor in the upper left-hand corner. If the mouse is plugged in to charge and is disconneted 20 minutes later, a warning will show that the ouse has been disconnected. I tried enabling the mouse-as-keyboard function (Command + F5), but the keys did not interact with the computer.

As a last resort, I tried to restore the Intel-based machine. After restarting, with the mouse and keyboard untethered,I began to see intermittent icons of a mouse and a keyboard, which indiated that neither were being found by the iMac. Any ideas as to how to marry the iMac, keyboard and mouse?

Don't count me on the Pro side of negatives out of Apple.

Long shot...

1.. Shut the machine down.

2.. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any peripheral devices.

3.. leave it for 10 minutes.

4.. Hold power Button in for 10 seconds

5.. Connect everything back up and restart.

It's 2:30 AM - will that "As little as $1.82!" fix the "Apple mouse was just working, and to be sure I installed fresh batteries isn't being recognized" issue over the Internet?

There are 3 iMacs in the room with me and I cannot find a wired mouse anywhere.

Someone told me 'It just works', but I think I may stop taking their advice.

sign me 'First used the Internet in 1968 and got my first Mac not long after 1984'
