I did a little more research.
I was also told by Apple Support that "Synced Content" did not contain any duplicate media files.
So I deleted my entire music collection on my iPad.
Both Music and Synced Content dropped to 0 byte usage.
I got back over 12+GB of storage.
Then I download, via a USB, all of my songs to my iPad - about 6.2GB
Lo and behold, both Music and Synced Content were 6.2 GB for a total of about 12+ GB.
So...either Apple Support lied or they really don't know anything about the new storage category called "Synced Cotent".
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and presume they are uninformed.
The larger question is why the developers of ios 17 decided to penalize Apple users who seek to manage their own media by double counting and unecessarily using resources.
I can come up with no technical reason why this is so since this "feature" did not exist prior to ios 17.
I also ran the same test on my iPhone with the same result.
My iPhone is an older model and I've been contemplating a new device.
However, I am reluctant to be forced into buying a device with more storage than I actually need simply to accomodate an apparent flaw in ios 17.
So I'm looking at Android for the phone or possibly a separate song player device for use when I travel and delete my songs from the iPhone.
I'll keep the iPad and live with the impact because I don't add a lot of apps to it. I use it mostly for browsing and reading.
Really not a nice tactic - especially undocumented and leaving your support associates having to take the brunt of the criticism.
I get conflicting information on my phone about this. In iPhone storage it says that I currently have used 152 GB of my 256 GB storage (although the image of usage doesn’t reflect this - indicating that my phone is almost full), yet when I scroll down to application Size, I can see Music taking up 102.9 GB & Synched content also supposedly taking up 102.5 GB:
Not very helpful!!
I will copy over some additional music files at some point to see what happens!!
Doesn't work for a PC. Also- even for a Mac - why is it even necessary to have duplicate files? At the most you could save pointers that identify music files as synced which would consume a lot less storage.
It's just bad design or untested software or Apple developers ignoring feedback from b**a users. And why no comment from Apple?
If it is a ply to buy iphone 15 it hasnt work.
I purchased iphone 15 pro 256gb last week, updated it to ios 17.0.2 when first prompted at set up and now I have 116Gb of music and 114Gb of synced content, with a message saying offload 68Gb to enable me to sync to itunes on laptop ????
I have spent this last week communicating with apple support, sending screenshots, phone logs and long calls.
I am now in direct contact with senior advisor who reports the matter is escalated to software engineers for an update to cure the storage issue.
First and last time I buy a new iphone at launch !!!
Just waiting now for notification as to when software update is available.
I think apple owe me a free gift for all this extra effort and disappointment.
As an electrical engineer I just cant believe how apple cannot test their software properly before launching to the public. Not to mention the amount of time its been creating an issue and still no available fix.
7.0.3. Music data no longer shows but Sync data does so no double count. But weird - I have 11GB of System Data but if I enable Offload Unused Apps in App Store settings, that drops by 10GB. Disable it and the 10GB returns. And I don't see apps offloaded.
So I downloaded and installed ios 17.0.3 yesterday.
The iphone storage then didnt show a duplication of music as before so I thought happy days its sorted.
Then I connected phone to pc and opened itunes. It backed up OK but when it was about to sync music I got the same error message saying not enough storage.
I have emailed the support engineer with my findings and we will be discussing further.
I only sync music to my pc I dont use icloud.
You think they would test an iphone syncing on their own itunes software on a pc.
This is so frustrating !!!
I don't subscribe to Apple One or Music and Sync Library in iTunes is always off. I have about 16GB of ripped music - and only ripped music - on my phone, about equal to what Sync Data is. Music shows 713MB usage. And 12GB of System Data.
I didn’t check system data beforehand. System data right now is 7.xxG
The double counting was more substantial before 7.0.3.
Something along the lines of 350G music and 294G of “synced content”
Now, music is only 65.xxG and synced content at 294G
Hi Mike
Do you sync everything to icloud ?
I only sync music using itunes to hard drive on pc.
I upgrading new phone software to ios 17.0.3 and then I can sync my old phone on ios 16 to itunes but if I try sync new phone on ios 17.0.3 to itunes on pc it still gives me error notice saying not enough memory.
Thanks
Same thing for me. And on top of that my notifications alerts only ring if I have the banner on. Which it was not like that before I updated to iOS 17. It messed up my notifications alerts and who knows what else.
I have the same issue after Comicflow was removed from the app store and I can't delete the content that app used to have after I deleted the app... it stuck with synced content that I can't access through the ipad or the mac
I am really annoyed because I think it’s way to try and make you need extra storage so much but they want you to either pay for iCloud or buy a phone or iPad or whatever with a lot more storage. I am not happy whatsoever. Yes another Apple clever money, marketing ploy and I trust this will get resolved. If enough people start to complain, and perhaps they lose sales.. I am for my Apple products, and all of them have suddenly jumped up with invisible storage that I never had before.
Bottom line - I lost approximately 10% of my storage across three iPhones and three iPads due to this issue.
I consider myself ripped off without an adequate explanation.
I'm hacked off enough to look at different devices including a new PC as all my devices are due for a replacement in the next 12 - 18 months.
Estimated impact will be in excess of $7,000 on Apple.
Not that they will notice.
It's really frustrating isn't it? Problem is that they aren't on their own. I had an awful time with a one plus phone that was eating up storage for no reason. Many customers complained but one plus just turned a blind eye and to my knowledge, never acknowledged that there was a problem.
Hopefully Apple will rectify the issue with an update, sooner rather than later!
It’s total nonsense that we are forced to lose valuable space on our devices unnecessarily, had I know Apple was going to pull this stunt, I would’ve stuck with iOS 16! Thanks for nothing, Apple. An Android phone doesn’t seem so bad all of a sudden.
I have over 101GB of storage which is supposedly data synchronised with my computer. I’ve checked my Mac and can’t see what’s being synchronised.
I’ve checked the internet to try and find out how to de synchronise and nothing really helps as most of the articles are about photos!
I don’t know what to do and am rapidly running out of space on my iPad. Apple aren’t helping or providing advice or updates so what are we to do?
