I did a little more research.
I was also told by Apple Support that "Synced Content" did not contain any duplicate media files.
So I deleted my entire music collection on my iPad.
Both Music and Synced Content dropped to 0 byte usage.
I got back over 12+GB of storage.
Then I download, via a USB, all of my songs to my iPad - about 6.2GB
Lo and behold, both Music and Synced Content were 6.2 GB for a total of about 12+ GB.
So...either Apple Support lied or they really don't know anything about the new storage category called "Synced Cotent".
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and presume they are uninformed.
The larger question is why the developers of ios 17 decided to penalize Apple users who seek to manage their own media by double counting and unecessarily using resources.
I can come up with no technical reason why this is so since this "feature" did not exist prior to ios 17.
I also ran the same test on my iPhone with the same result.
My iPhone is an older model and I've been contemplating a new device.
However, I am reluctant to be forced into buying a device with more storage than I actually need simply to accomodate an apparent flaw in ios 17.
So I'm looking at Android for the phone or possibly a separate song player device for use when I travel and delete my songs from the iPhone.
I'll keep the iPad and live with the impact because I don't add a lot of apps to it. I use it mostly for browsing and reading.
Really not a nice tactic - especially undocumented and leaving your support associates having to take the brunt of the criticism.
its not just a display bug. when i try to sync with itunes on a pc, i get a message not enough memory available but there should be. synced content is a duplication of music files
music = 116GB
synced content = 115GB
I only sync music to itunes
Same here. I had 25 GB music plus 25 GB of new synced content. But I only sync messages, email, and contacts. There is no way I have 25 GB of data in those three apps. When I delete 1 GB of music, the synced content also goes down by 1 GB, and I get 2 GB of storage back. I know Apple wants everyone to buy overpriced storage from them but this is criminal. Sorta like increasing photo resolution for the sole purpose of requiring cloud storage.
This is so bad. I have over 20gb in the synched folder and yes it is the same as my music. Just bought an additional 200gb of iCloud hoping to shift it there but can’t. Shocking. What can we do? Don’t want to lose my music library (it is not Apple so can’t save in iCloud)
I’ve been having this issue too. I just turned off music sync so my Apple Music downloads are down to 1.66gb but the synced content is still 16.17gb. I did just get 20gb back but it should be more like 40GB.
I have a similar issue. In settings, analysis and improvements, I do not share information with Apple, but all files created by the iPhone, ips, remain in the phone and are not copied during synchronization. Apple doesn’t give me an answer.
It does appear that there are many of us all experiencing the same problem. It is the music that is the problem. Apple have not stepped up. No answers, no idea?? Having updated to 17.02 I had expected and hoped it would fix it, but no. Had to offload almost all apps to be able to get the update.
is this another Apple ply for everyone to buy the iPhone 15?
Hoping Apple will acknowledge and help
soon.
This may be the case for you, but many of us are seeing synced content actually taking up dozens of extra gigabytes. Apple has escalated my case to engineering and claim that they are absolutely going to have a fix soon.
Like I said earlier, others ARE having a storage problem, including me. THere's as much synced content as there is music, and I have deleted it all and put it all back, only to find 30gb music and 30gb synced content that sholdn't be there and wasn't there before updating to 17.
Look, I didn't come here to argue. I installed iOS 17, and the next morning I woke up to a warning that my iPhone was full and Id need to make space somehow. I had somewhere between 30-50gb free space before updating and then I didn't.
So what you are saying is wrong for my situation, and for many more reporting all over the internet. Stop arguing.
I was just pointing out what Apple engineering told me. I am not trying to argue or anything. It took me a few sessions with tech support to understand what Apple was telling me about Synced Content. So if I have offended you or anyone else, my sincerest apology. I hope you all get it sorted out with Apple.
On a 256GB 14 Pro Max, 17.0.2, I see the following measures:
iTunes says 84.34GB free
iPhone Storage says 86.25
About says 90.56
iMazing says 96.42 (edited to correct)
Synced content says 15.83GB used
It absolutely is blocking access to the storage in the amount of twice the total amount of storage space needed to store the music copied from my desktop. How else can you explain why my availability memory shrunk by over 24 gigabytes after installing iOS 17.0.1. I didn’t add any additional music. If that storage that is shown as synched data is not actually locking up the space shown, I should have more than 24 gigabytes of available storage to run the iOS update to v.2. It says it only requires 5 + megabytes of available storage and reports that it can’t install due to lack of available memory
I have been in touch with senior apple support last week. They are aware of the issues and I sent them my phone logs to help engineers. I also pointed him to the forums etc and said this issue is growing fast so it needs looking at.
I have had an update today....
Hi M
Just as a heads up, I have already
forwarded the issue to our engineers and I am waiting to hear back from them.
I will revert to you as soon as I hear
something.
Thanks,
N
Exactly. But it’s also preventing adding anything else to that storage. Not just interfering with the installer. Can’t add photos, music, or other content that exceeds the storage shown as available in either the about menu or iPhone storage report
Really hard (i.e., impossible) to understand the reasoning and rationale behind this design and implementation. What review process passed this on? What testing process? (Retired now but my perspective comes from 45 years as a s/w & h/w engineer.)
