iOS 17 wallpapers blurry at top

Hi I updated to iOS 17 yesterday and my wallpapers are getting blurred on the top, my wallpapers from the top seem to be fine yet but I found beautiful new wallpapers and it’s ruined because of the top blur. My phone is an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Apple, this feature is so freaking annoying!!! i want to be able to see my whole wallpaper and this new feature makes it impossible for it to look good or aesthetic. i either have to zoom in so close that the image is blurry and cuts out the best parts, or i have to have this hideous blur at the top that also cuts out the best parts. PLEASE change this or at least make it an option to turn it on and off. i swear you guys always add these nonsense features that don’t make any sense. ever heard of the saying “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke”?????? please fix this. it makes me wish i never updated my phone to ios 17. from the looks of it, many other people hate the feature too. give the people what they want!

Just got done messaging with IT from Apple, this is a new “feature” in iOS 17 and this is how it goes, if you zoom out or try to make it look the way you want it to, the image will blur, if you zoom in, it unblurs. As of now he said, there is no known fix to this other than having a wallpaper that perfectly fits the format for the specific iPhone you are using. He said Apple did this to provide a cleaner look in general to the time battery indicator etc. Idk if this is true or not, but knowing Apple, this is most likely the reason.

So, if you want a perfect fit when finding a wallpaper for your iPhone, I recommend what has worked for me so far after this nonsense of a “feature” has been added, this link shows all of the pixel sizes etc for each iPhone up to the 14 Pro Max. I can’t currently find the sizes for 15’s but I’m sure they are out there. https://cnbgear.com/tips-guides/iphone-wallpaper-size/

This is absolutely stupid.
Half of my wallpapers are ruined. Who thought it was a good idea to blur HALF of the image when not zoomed and to not to put a button to switch it off?
Whoever must hate its customers, it's driving me crazy.

Have you told Apple how you feel?

The person you are talking to is correct. The blur option you are referring to is not the same as what is being discussed. It’s also not a bug, it’s an intended feature. Leave it to apple to restrict their users in the most obnoxious and dumb ways they can think of.

This is known as extend wallpaper and it’s ideally designed to aid visibility and allow you to set a wallpaper that doesn’t fit the required device aspect ratio. You can actually switch it off by toggling the three dots on the bottom right side of the screen and switching off extended wallpaper. Hope this helped. Cheers.

Here's a workaround form reddit user u/Heavenguard:

  • Go to your photos, choose a picture you want.
  • Click edit, crop, then the square on the top right hand side with little squares in it, choose "wallpaper", then save the cropped image.
  • Find the image in your photos album, then select "set as wallpaper".
  • Whatever you do, do not pinch to zoom out otherwise that will cause it to blur.

Same thing here. I have a slideshow of pics that change every hour on my 14 pro max. It was perfect… now, after the update, it’s all whacked out. It look as good with the top portion blurred out. Especially when it’s a face. Just give us the option to turn it off Apple

(yes I read the other comments and no you cannot turn it off on Home Screen slideshow)

If you simply save any picture you want to use as Wallpaper on your iPhone and then don't resize it, it won't blur.

Open any photo you want.

Tap Edit

Tap Crop

Tap the box with boxes in a box at the top

Below will be the format you want to save the photo

Choose Wallpaper

Tap Done

Then you can use without worrying about a blur.

So contact Apple. I don't know anymore than I've provided and we are just users here, like you. Apple can likely help you with this. I still believe it's the layered effect. Maybe try to make the Lock Screen Wallpaper from new and see if when you create it fresh you get the options listed in the link I provided.

The blur on top is intentional so the photo does not interfere with the data and controls at the top of the poster screen.

However, do let Apple know of your displeasure and they may alter this behavior or offer an option to disable it in the future:

My background isn’t something that needs blur, it is digitally created. It looks so much better zoomed out and the blur makes it look like crap. Idk, I just kinda hope apple sees this.
They won't see your comment here on this user to user only forum.

Tell Apple your thoughts here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

you could digitally add black around it so u can zoom out as the picture would result bigger, as a solution for the moment
