StandBy mode: why does my screen turn off after 30 seconds even when Always On is active?

I have an iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 17. When I attach my phone horizontally to the Anker powered stand I have, it goes into StandBy mode. But after 30 seconds, the screen shuts off. This, despite the fact that I have Always On selected in StandBy prefs. (It comes back on when I tap the screen.)

Why is the screen turning off?

IP 15 pro, running 17.3.1. No focus modes selected at night. Standby settings selected as display never off.

I have tried x3 different stands : anker, spigen and Belkin …. Only the belkin chargeboost WIZ010ttWH has worked for me in giving consistent display staying on throughout the night…. belkin is the only device of the three to have a dedicated power cable and transformer (the anker and spigen had usbC inputs) . So I believe this issue to be charger related and more specifically something to do with how the chargers are supplying consistent current.

This also happened to me, and also after a while when I tapped the display to re-show Standby the font would turn white instead of red (like the phone thought it was in a lit room). I was using a 'Night' focus mode. I made sure to turn off Focus mode before putting the phone on the charger and it seems to have mostly fixed it.

Are you doing the following exactly:

Start StandBy

  1. Connect iPhone to a charger and set it down on its side, keeping it stationary.
  2. Press the side button.
  3. You can swipe left or right to switch between widgets, photos, and clocks. Swipe up or down to scroll between options for each of these views.
  4. When Night Mode is on for StandBy, the screen adapts to low ambient light at night and displays in a red tint so that it’s not intrusive while you’re sleeping.

I have the same problem with Standby being set to Never turn off, yet randomly doing so during the night. A tap "wakes" it and there is no issue with the night mode being what turns on. I contacted Apple Support and they were stymied.

Personally, I think the problem has to do with the charger. At some point after the phone has charged something results in a lack of power (or maybe less power) to go to the phone, and then the display blanks. This is similar to a problem charging the Apple Watch where it periodically during the night lights up and beeps (if not in Theater Mode or set to Do Not Disturb). My gut says it has to do with power again flowing to the device.

However, this is just a guess based on observation. Maybe someone in the Community (or Apple itself) can verify this assertion.

I think you're right; I contacted the company that made the charger stand, and they claimed that power is constant to the charger stand. However, when the iPhone is fully charged, it would make sense that power to the iPhone would be reduced significantly, which could lead to the iPhone going to sleep.

I hope Apple comes up with a fix for this, but when I've called, the reps I've spoken with were totally clueless and unhelpful.

OK, I've tested all sorts of things:

iPhone 15 Pro Max running latest iOS version as of 2/29/2024

FOCUS MODE - Having FOCUS mode on makes no difference; I've tried it with it OFF all night, and invariably my iPhone 15 Pro Max goes dark sometime in the night. I have a theory about why (which I'll explain later).

LOW POWER MODE - I don't use it, never have. Having it ON or OFF makes no difference with my phone and stand.

CASE/NO CASE - no difference. I have a MagSafe case though.

I think the reason my phone goes dark is because it reaches 100% charge, after which my MagSafe stand (which is a Journey that I really like, other than this issue) stops sending a signal to the phone. The makers of the stand claim that current to the stand is constant, but I think it ceases to send a signal once the iPhone reaches maximum charge.

I have the same issue with my 15 Pro Max. I have Standby set to "Always on," and inevitably the screen goes black sometime during the night.

I'll try turning off Focus mode, but I'm going to bet it doesn't fix the issue.

I tried force-quitting all apps, turning off Standby, and restarting; that didn't fix it.

I've got the latest version of iOS on the phone but so far no joy.
