iPadOS 17 Performance on 2nd Gen iPad Pro 12.9"?

My (2nd Generation) iPad Pro (12.9") remains a thing of beauty ... but since it's the oldest model that's compatible with iPadOS17, I'm hesitant to install the iOS upgrade, since I'd hate to see the newer O/S make the unit slower.

Have any of ya'all with an older (A10X Fusion-based) iPad Pro installed the upgrade? If so, how's the unit performing with iPadOS17? Still snappy? Kinda sluggish? Total boat anchor?

(I also have an iPad Air 2 and it's a great piece of hardware ... but with the O/S upgrades over time, it's SO much slower than it used to be!)

I'd be grateful for any feedback ... and I'm sure I'm not the only one with an iPad Pro 2nd Gen who's wondering whether to install the upgrade! Thanks!

@ Orthogonally: hi and thanks for sharing. One additional question, do you use anapple pencil 1 with your iPad Pro 2nd Gen? Saw a post below with someone who updated and now their apple pencil doesn't work.

Thanks!

Thanks for asking ... indeed, based on a couple of the answers here (and elsewhere), I did install the upgrade.

And just today, I installed the 17.1 update.

The iPad Pro 12.9" (Second Generation) unit is performing well.

If it's any slower running iPadOS 17, it's not enough for me to notice ... and certainly not enough to make me regret it.

Thanks, everyone, for your input.

Did you ever get an answer? Did you upgrade?

I, too, I have a 2nd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro, and I'm reluctant to upgrade past 16.7.x, in light of the increasing problems with on screen keyboard delays and battery problems that I've experienced with each recent update.

While I (and the OP, I'm sure) recognize that this device is on the official supported list, neither that information nor testimonies about how it behaves on other iPad models is particularly helpful to me. As such, I'm going to repeat the original question: has anybody upgraded their 2nd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro to iPadOS 17? If so, what were your experiences with it?

Your second generation iPad Pro is capable of update to iPadOS 17.

If you are already running iPadOS 16.6.x on your iPad, you should anticipate equivalent performance following update to iPadOS 17. While I've not test with your specific model, I have an equivalent specification iPad Pro 10.5" that has the same A10X CPU and RAM configuration; I have not observed any noticeable difference in system performance.

Be sure that your iPad model is able to upgrade :

Compatible iPads:

  • iPad Pro 12.9 (5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd gen)
  • iPad Pro 11 (3rd, 2nd and 1st gen)
  • iPad Pro 10.5
  • iPad (10th, 9th, 8th, 7th and 6th gen)
  • iPad mini (5th and 6th gen)
  • iPad Air (5th, 4th and 3rd gen)

This means that if your iPad is an iPad Pro from 2015 or 2016, or a 5th generation iPad from 2017, or older than any of them, it won’t be able to update to iPadOS 17.

I have the same iPad as you and it is working really god so far running 17.5.1 but the only problem I am now finding is that the home button is not working as it was for finger Touch ID. Also because of that I can no longer force start it if there is a problem. And I have passkey set up for everything. Once I get in it works OK opening single apps but what good is that. To me it is a software problem because I also have a 2019 iPad Air and it is doing the same. I was going to buy the 2024 iPad Pro but now I won’t because of this. My iPads look brand new and OK I know it will not update soon but still let me use it as it is. So to answer your question I would say yes download it if you don’t use passkey. Hope this helps
