iOS 17 Default Notification Sound has changed

Why did Apple unilaterally change my default notification sound from tri-tone to Rebound? I suffer from hearing loss and can no longer hear the notification sound. Why can’t the iPhone user control what sounds are used for their notifications? Much like Pavlov’s dogs responding to a bell, for as long as I have used an iPhone, I have been able to hear the notification sound and know what it was notifying me about without looking. Now Apple just decides on its own to change the sound while preventing users from setting their own notification sounds. That is so self-righteous of Apple to assume they know what sounds users want or need to hear.

Unnecessary change is not always better. It doesn’t improve the user experience, it now just makes it silent for me. Please allow users to select what sound to set for notifications.

You can now change it! Under sounds and haptics in settings there’s now a “default alerts” section and you can change the tone back to tri-tone! :)

What ios release are you on? I am on 17.1.2 I just did what you said and I don't see any DEFAULT. I was told that ios 17.2 would fix the problem.

UPDATE: I am loading 17.2 now. We will see if this is fixed.

2nd UPDATE: Well 17.2 has fixed the problem. And now I also see the DEFAULT ALERTS button.

Thanks APPLE for fixing this problem. Hopefully in future releases there won't be any arbitrary changes to iphone users settings.

I have hearing aids but as any one knows, I don’t have them in while sleeping…I could Not, for the life of me figure out why
I would sleep through my alarm of the morning and through the day as well UNTIL I was actually awake when it sounded through the day. It’s NO WONDER why I slept through the alarm…. I CAN BARELY HEAR THE “Radial” alert (default on alarms now) WITH my hearing aids!
PUT THE DEFAULT BACK TO “RADAR” WHY WOULD APPLE CHANGE THINGS LIKE THIS-NOT ONLY DUE TO THE HARD HEARING-BUT AS WELL, as a persons brain is “trained” for sounds especially after such a long time.
I have always have Siri set my alarms for convenience and don’t even have to touch the phone.
NOT HAPPY!

This complaint has been resolved by Apple...

Ensure that you have updated your iPhone/iPad to the most recent version of iOS/iPadOS - at time of writing, this currently being iOS/iPadOS 17.4.1.

Having updated your device, you can now set the default Alert/Notification sound to anything that you choose:

Settings > Sounds > Default Alerts - select as required

Don't forget, should you choose to do so, to change any other Notification sounds for your individual Apps:

Settings > Notifications >

Got the same problem. Can't f-n hear it if there's any background noise at all... It's also completely 100% lost if any other music is playing in the area! AND, I'm a 'set-it and forget it' sort of guy. So, had look it up. Results? Here ya go...

To Change:

ALERTS: Go to Settings > Sounds and Haptics > Default Alerts > "Tri-tone" (or other preference).

RINGTONE: Settings > Sounds and Haptics > Ringtone > Classic > "Marimba". My preference is the old default since... well, forever...

Cheers mate!

No...this is not the solution to the problem we are referring to. The default alert sound used to be Tri-Tone. For some strange reason, Apple decided to change it to Rebound, a very quiet tone, in iOS 17.

Any app that uses the iOS system default tone now uses the Rebound sound - which is very difficult to hear.

I contacted Apple about this and they said there currently is no way to change the default alert sound. Hopefully it will be adjustable in some future update.
