In IOS 17, how do I change the gray background on my contacts to black background. The gray is annoying and colors use more power.

That appears the same answer as I got. Now I can INDIVIDUALLY change my (257) Contacts.

Seems like an unusually harsh sentence for a color choice. Do I love the gray background. No. Do I hate it. No. It's just a color and doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Since it seems to bother you, use the feedback link IdrisSeabright posted about to let Apple know your thoughts.

Alpha characters are readable insofar as there is good contrast. One example would be a very dark green (letters or background) against a very light green (letters or background). Readability is mostly not so much a matter of color as of contrast, light and dark, Any light gray background needs black or at least dark letters for the characters on it. The new Contacts pages have a light gray background and white letters, so the background and the lettering are both light in color, so not easily readable due to lack of contrast. This is what is causing a lot of feedback and needs fixing. It is surprising it came out whiter lettering on light gray. Some colors like yellow cannot be darkened, unless you get a dark gold, which would have to be very dark to work as a background with white lettering.

As I said, aesthetics are a personnel matter. I was specifically addressing the contention that this change would have a noticeable impact on battery life.

You can certainly let Apple know you disagree with their design choices:
