Getting Dark Mode to work in the Contacts app

Can I get Dark Mode to work in the Contacts app? In iOS 18, toggling on Dark Mode worked to show bright text on a black background everywhere, including the Contacts app. After upgrading to iOS 26, the Contacts app has a strange lavender background color which does not honor my Dark Mode setting preference.

The background colors in the Contacts app when you open a contact reflect the call poster that is associated with it. If none is associated, the lavender colored background will be the default.

You can change the poster to a dark image, or a completely black background, to change this. You can see an example I have created below - there I have used a completely black background as the poster image.

I think I've figured it out. A shortcut.

I've made a shortcut that can change contact photos. It's only semi-automatic. When you tap the shortcut, a list of your contacts appears, and you just tap the contact where you want to change the background, and the background is changed. So you don't have to go into each contact and select edit, add photo, find photo, apply, save.

I tested it on my iPhone on iOS 26.1, and it works.

Please note! This shortcut changes your contact's "avatar" or "profile picture" - and not the contact poster. However, your contact's profile picture will still reflect the color of the background, so if you follow my guide, you will get a completely black background, as in my screenshot further up. The disadvantage is that if you already have a picture on a contact, this will be overwritten with a black background.

Follow the steps here:

1. Create a photo album called Contact Photo in the Photo app

2. Download a completely black background, and save it to the Contact Photo album. Maybe this: LINK However, you can choose your own background. It is only important that there is only one image in the album.

3. Get my shortcut here: DOWNLOAD

You may be asked for permission to allow the shortcut to use your contacts. Grant it permission. Now you just tap the shortcut and the contact you choose will have a completely black background, as well as a completely black profile picture.

This is not quite what you asked for, but hopefully it can be a little help

Are you accustomed to showing people in business settings their contact page on your iPhone? I've never shown anyone, professionally or personally, their contact on my phone. But if you do, it seems pretty easy to just say that the color is the standard color for contacts in iOS 26. No offense, but this seems a silly problem to be concerned about. And to your question, yes, you'd have to change every contact poster for every contact if the color is that objectionable to you.

This is a user to user only forum. As users, we had no control or input to the color Apple selected this year. Feel free to let Apple know your thoughts about this years contact background color here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Thanks JSberg. That looks great, but I have nearly a thousand contacts since I use my phone for business. Would I have to change each one individually? That would take way too much time and effort, and it would still be an ongoing problem for new contacts. Dark Mode used to work just fine in iOS 18 for the Contacts app. When taking customers to lunch I didn't have to worry about them asking why I have them shown on my phone with a lavender color, which is honestly embarrassing - especially in a professional business setting.

Why hello Lobster. I hope you have been well. Yes I routinely have the contact page for a customer open and visible when I meet with them since I often confirm contact details, and update the notes with things of concern to them they want me to implement after our meetings. Sometimes they will even enter details for me directly on my phone. Yes I can explain to them it's a forced color setting of my iPhone OS now which I have no control over, but it doesn't make it any less embarrassing and unprofessional looking, especially to my customers who do not have iPhones and can not empathize. After some oddness of Contacts not honoring Dark Mode and lacking contrast in previous iOS versions, things finally settled down in iOS 18 to Dark Mode working again and life was good. I thought perhaps this time there might be a different toggle setting I was not aware of to indicate I really want Dark Mode to be Dark Mode everywhere, but I guess not. Anyway thanks for confirming there is nothing we can do about this other than giving feedback to Apple again.

OK. Makes sense. If whoever you're sharing their contact page with owns an iPhone, no explanation is needed as they would have the same color on their contacts on their phone. If they don't have an iPhone and you feel you need to explain, you just say it's the color Apple chose and I'm sure they'll not think any less of you.

Otherwise, you're correct in that you need to provide feedback to Apple directly on this. I don't have an issue with Lavender as a color choice, but there are others here who seem to.

Again, arguing with me why lavender isn't an acceptable color is pointless. Tell Apple. And I provided a link for you to do just that.

And honestly, before you meet with a customer who would be that offended by a color you had no choice over, change their contact poster before you meet with them. I don't imagine you show 1000 customers their contact on your phone at the same time.

Makes sense. The worst thing that can happen with this shortcut is that you delete a profile picture from a contact. The shortcut can't do anything else, and it's only 1 contact at a time, so it's not like the shortcut will wipe all of your contact pictures at once.
