– Portrait photos, sometimes ignored from import
– Portrait tools not available anymore
iPhone 13 mini, iOS 16.x and 17.1
iMac M1 24", OS X Monterey, later OS X Ventura 13.6 with Photos 8.0 (560.0.110)
1.) Portrait photo captured under iOS 16.x, imported into Monterey 12.7.1
For the first time, portrait photos couldn't be edited on the iMac with Photos app. Could an upgrade to Ventura help? Yes, it does. I am happy again.
2.) Under Ventura 13.6 now, the photo is marked as 'Portrait.' The portrait settings in the toolbar on the right are present but inactive. Clicking the 'Portrait' button at the bottom left activates them, and the image can be adjusted. Huh, managed.
3.) Now a new 'Portrait' captured under iOS 17.1, imported into Ventura 13.6 with Photos 8.0
Sometimes the portrait photo is not imported at all. Other times, the import is successful, but the portrait tools are nowhere to be found.
In other words …
Apple! You sold me an iPhone 13 mini that can take such great portrait photos. Everything is fine until the day I update iOS to the latest version. Then, nothing works regarding the portrait mode. I'm forced to upgrade OS X to the latest version. Hooray, it works again. (iOS 16.x and Ventura in June 2023)
In the fall 2023, iOS 17 arrives, and then iOS 17.1. Update! (Shortly after that, Sonoma 14.0 comes.) And again, the portrait photos are not working anymore under iOS 17.1 and Ventura 13.6 with Photos app 8.0.
Apple, do you want to force me to update my OS X to the currently early stage Sonoma 14.0 or 14.1 just to see if the portrait mode works again and for how long?
Hey Apple, this is very poor work, and it makes me furious. You take away features that you currently promote with the new iPhone and have worked fine so far, also with iPhone 13. You don't loose a word about it; the problem (or removal) gets simply ignored.
Maybe you can give me an idea, why I should keep on buying Apple products in the future. Probably not to keep on with such hick-hack.
