Is it possible to restore the iMessage shortcuts bar above the keyboard which included the camera icon so its easy to add photos to iMessage? The new menu is so longwinded to get something on the second screen like a gif from #images (not sure why its the only item with a #). Also, at least allow us to drag the menu down to cancel it instead of a press. If its not broken, don't fix it!
No, it's not possible to revert to the previous version. You can, however, let Apple know your thoughts on the matter here:

I also find it really hard to use such a basic function now. What I have found helps is by deselecting all the apps and re-arranging.

Sadly, I agree. I preferred the mini-apps for iMessage just under the text field. I also appreciated the fact that in iOS 16 we could arrange them in the order we wished. Most of all, some, like the audio recording mini-app have simply disappeared.
Yeah, I really don’t like this update. It’s way too over complicated. I don’t want to click three times then scroll to find photos or GIPHY. The old way was better. I don’t know why we have to keep “fixing things” that aren’t broken.

I like this version much better, personally. Much less cluttered. You can also get gloved that work on touch screens.
Though the second bar is gone for now, I did find a way for frequently used emojis and other items, hit the plus sign and select Icons, the keyboard drops and you’ll have those at your disposal. Tap in subject and keyboard reappears. Still have not figured out how to display emojis within the text message though…

way too many steps now especially if you are sending a quick response to someone. Really awkward to use now.
