In Mail gmail account shows triangle (yield sign) with !

I cannot get mail from a new gmail account in Apple Mail, neither MacOS 11.7.10 nor iOS 16.6.1

In MacOS Mail it shows the warning triangle (yield sign with !). When I click that, it shows a popup that just says "online status" with options to cancel or try again.

On iOS Apple mail, there is no warning sign, but no email is shown either.

I can read the new account using Google web mail or the Gmail iOS app (the account details are fine).

I can read three other gmail accounts in Mail in MacOS and iOS (Google is not 'broken'!).

What do I do next?

Your first step is to visit gmail on the web, and make sure you can set it up to use IMAP.

Then on Mail, add other... account in the Mail menu -> Accounts.

The Gmail defacto account format may no longer work properly, and you need to use IMAP instead.
