Should you unpair Apple Watch first before migrating to a new phone?

Moving to iPhone 15 Pro Max from iPhone 12 Pro. Should you unpair your Apple Watch before starting the migration process? I'll use the built in new process rather than a backup on my Mac. I've read conflicting instructions. One says to unpair, the other doesn't mention it at all.

No. You should set your new iPhone next to your existing iPhone, and when you first power up the new iPhone, it will ask you if you wish to transfer your data from the old iPhone.

This process will even transfer over your Apple Watch pairing.

It is a painless way to switch to a new iPhone and have your Apple Watch come along for the ride.

I have an Apple Watch connected to my iPhone 12 and need to get it connected to my new iPhone 15. My data and settings all transferred to the new phone but the watch is still stuck on the iPhone 12. My watch will not pair to the iPhone 15, it doesn’t even show up. My Bluetooth is on and everything had the latest iOS. The only other solution I see is unpairing it from the old phone. What a hassle.
