iOS 17 Storage Space Bug / Issue

This feature/item was not there upon iOS 16.6 - but after the upgrade to iOS17 - phone storage data has been taken up due to SYNCED CONTENT.

There was no reason for it to take up nearly 20-30% of the storage away from the phone (when my device had about 30-40 gigs left I'm down to 4.23gbs). This has disallowed me to back up my device to my iMac due to now lack of storage space b/c of this issue.

This seems to be an un-tested feature/bug/issue. I'm sure many users would not be happy knowing that their device storage was depleted for some unwanted/untested feature.

Is anybody else noticing this issue as well (as among many reddit forums /alternative forums as well).

The 17.1.2 update didn’t help, but I am seconding the restore comment.

Back up your phone, wipe it, then restore it from that backup. Since I’m a Windows computer user and I don’t use iCloud, I backed up my phone via iTunes. I then did a factory reset of my phone (make sure to keep your eSim/carrier data, it will give you that option before you completely erase it), then backed it up from the backup I created. You should also be able to create a backup from iCloud if you don’t have iTunes. It’s been around half a day and it LOOKS like everything is normal so far. One of my apps shrank from 1.4gb to 417mb, and the Documents & Data size now looks reasonable. Previously, simply deleting apps did nothing to change the size of Documents & Data.

It took a few hours and time will tell if is bloats back to its bigger size, but it’s worth a shot. Just be very careful when backing up and erasing your phone.

I have checked today after updating to 17.0.1 and the issue is still there but this time a little different.

Now when i put some music on it shows 6 gb of music 6 gb of synced content again but it is actually 6 gb of storage when i calculate before and after.

on ios 17 it was duplicated and same 6gb would take 12 gb of storage in total. Lets hope ios developers fix this soon completely as now on the graphic for storage music and synced content are the same size still.

+1. The update to version 17 'stole' 8 GB. Updating to 17.0.1 and performing iTunes backups returned around 4 GB. However, 4 GB are still 'missing.'

Today's update to 17.0.2 has worsened the situation, once again, with my 64 GB iPad Air 3rd Gen now almost completely full...

iPadOS 17.0.2: 9.48 GB

System Data: 9.44 GB

I find the System Data value, in particular, to be extremely high.

For those wondering what is happening with this issue, I have been working with a senior support person and Apple engineering, and here is some hopefully encouraging news:

”Im back into office and see Engineering has sent one last final email. They have now deemed this as something they are currently working on and will release something soon (no estimated timeframe) to fix this issue. This usually is in the form of a new update. They have gotten other reports on this as well and have now considered this an emerging issue. So with that, if you do choose to exchange your device that is still totally fine if you do not prefer to wait on the fix they are working on.”

Hopefully the images attach correctly. You have to look closely b/c the storage amounts when I wake up each morning show the iOS taking up A LOT of space. It’s in gray so hard to see if you’re not looking for it. After a reboot, it drops back down to my normal usage.

Im conditioning myself to check as soon as I wake up so I can do the reboot. It takes several minutes for it to complete. Longer than usual TBH but it seems to make things work better throughout the day. Yesterday, it hit that falsely advertised limit and killed the work call I was on.

How do we ensure Apple knows? I’m assuming they aren’t reading all this.

Somewhere in this thread someone said they backed up to the cloud, wiped the phone, and started over from a factory reset. I tried that; it didn’t work. While the filling up is slightly less each day, I still have to reboot my phone every morning or it will fill up by noon and “brick”.

Additionally, the reboot wiped out all my apple watch faces that had been set up for years to do what I needed under various situations (work, workouts, photography, etc). They are all gone. AND many of the watch complications are now missing from the phone settings including apple’s own weather complication. Other apps are also behaving badly including CarPlay. So I don’t recommend a hard reset if you can get by with rebooting each day and everything else working as it should.

I did submit a feedback/bug ticket with apple. I’d suggest everyone doing that b/c they said right on the page they won’t respond individually but if they see enough submissions for the same problem they’ll look into it. So maybe they don’t look at these “boards” much. For now, I’ll just get by with rebooting I guess…

How often do you use social media? And when you use social media items- do they save photos/gifs/vids automatically? Those apps cache a lot of stuff. This post would have nothing to do with what's going on, but some advice, delete your social apps restart phone and reinstall. That should help, but that doesn't take away the fact it's going to recache some data - I'd also consider disable "auto save photos/vids/gifs" from those social apps, to help cut down on storage overload.
