system preferences - no options

I can only see my ID when I open system preferences. When I click on the 12 dots icon in the top bar of the window, nothing happens. I can't access any preferences. All I see is this:

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.0

Hi watty_woody,

Is this MacBook Air owned by a school or business? If so, you may have device management and restrictions enabled the prohibit you from accessing or making changes to the system preferences. If owned by an institution reach out to the IT department to further assist.

If you're unsure if you have a profile installed check the steps below found in the article here: Use configuration profiles to standardize settings on Mac computers

"View an installed configuration profile

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Profiles.
  2. If you haven’t installed any configuration profiles, Profiles preferences isn’t available.
  3. Select a profile in the Profiles list to view information about it."

If your Mac is not owned or managed by an institution test booting to safe mode to see if you can access your system preferences. Start up your Mac in safe mode

Cheers.
