CarPlay iOS17 not working

So since I did the iOS 17 update, CarPlay no longer works. I have reset the settings on my phone, my car, went through every step I found online and I have installed the most recent bug fix. So I am at a loss and I am assuming when my iPhone 15 Pro Max gets here today that I will still have the problem

Greetings Erklee102381,

To ensure that you're covering all the bases, the following steps may be able to provide you with some additional assistance:

"Check your wired or wireless connection and your iPhone settings

If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.

2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.

3. Restart your iPhone and your car.

4. Make sure that Siri is on.

5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Connect your iPhone with a USB-C connector to CarPlay with the USB-C to Lightning Adapter

You can use the USB-C to Lightning Adapter with wired CarPlay in most vehicles. However, some combinations of adapters, cables, and vehicle entertainment systems might disrupt the wired CarPlay connection. In this situation or for cars that support only wired CarPlay, use a direct connection with a USB cable.

If you are using a wired CarPlay connection and a USB C to USB A cable, a lot of people are having this issue. The problem seems to be the cables - many just don't seem to work. None of my existing USB C to A did. However, people reported good results with Anker products. I bought the Series 3 (link here: https://www.newegg.com/p/0S8-014F-00215?Item=9SIACCUDSW7671), which I can confirm work flawlessly in 2 separate vehicles (2017 Ford F150 and 2020 Toyota Prius Prime).

After much trail and error, including removing the "connected devices" from the car's InfoTainment system, and re-adding the iPhone over Bluetooth and CarPlay, I'd get a session or two working but would stop connecting after a day or two.

My problem had to do with changes in the VPN software (F-Secure) IKE protocol I used - I changed from IKEYv2 back to IKEYv1 (I know, not as secure), and when I removed the devices and readded them, I made sure VPN was OFF during that initial pairing and setup and VOILA everything not only worked but the configurations continued to work and persisted after multiple car sessions (turning on and off the car) and over many days.

So, I'm good until the next software patch, update, feature or change in this complex web of integrated technologies!

After reviewing countless (and often tediously complicated) "cures" for the problem, I came upon one that is, in fact, the magic fix for those who are having Carplay problems with their HONDAS (I have a 2020 CR-V Hybrid). There is not a problem with IOS 17 or Apple's Carplay software. The problem, at least with Hondas, is the software running Honda's infotainment system. The solution is slap-your-forehead simple: Start the car. Wait for the infotainment screen to boot up. Push and hold the audio on/off/volume button for 5-10 seconds until the screen asks whether you wish to reboot the system. Press "Yes." Wait for the reboot to complete. Turn the car off. Plug your iPhone into the appropriate USB port. Turn the car back on. Go to "Home" on your infotainment screen. Select "Apple Carplay." Voila. You're home free. . . .

Update: iPhone 13 on iOS17. After upgrading the Kia navigation and infotainment didn't fix immediately I tried this and it is finally working. Deleted car from car play, deleted car from bluetooth. Reset car infotainment using reset button. Switched off car. Connected phone using a usb to usb-c cable confirmed to permit data transfer (it was actually one from an acer tablet charger), then switched car on. Got the 'allow car play when locked' request and approved. Car play working fully. Only taken a month...

MY STORY AND RESOLUTION: I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro Max to iPhone 15 Pro Max and CarPlay worked fine with my new 2023 Honda CR-V straight away. I had installed iOS Version 17.1.2 a couple days ago and it worked yesterday morning. Then, when at work Focus came on unexpectedly where I was at work and said it comes on when at that location (don't remember ever configuring that!). When I got back in my car, it no longer worked. I reset everthing - removed the connections from my Honda Infotainment configuration, removed the Bluetooth devce on my phone, rebooted my phone. Same. Over and over a couple times. But here is what I think may have led to the resolution - maybe settings in these features were forced by 17.1.2? Maybe they were improperly handled when Focus activated?

MY RESOLUTION: I first made sure the Settings / Screen Time / Content & Privacy Restrictions / Allowed Apps / CarPlan was ON (why was it turned OFF?). Then I went to Settings / Face ID & Password / Accessories was turned OFF (so it would not force me to look at my phone each time I entered my car and wanted it to auto-connect without having to authenticate with Face recognition each time.) Now it works each time. Go figure.

Hi folks, yesterday I bought a new cable at the local Apple Store and all is working fine. It had been frustrating, especially since the old cable worked fine with my iPhone 7+ but not with the 13. Obviously with the latter, the old cable had trouble trading data. I think the shorter cables might be more prone to bending and damage. Anyway, glad I have a solid fix.

Hi, I solved the problem, at least for me. I have a 2019 Chevrolet Impala and an iPhone 13 Pro Max recently updated to iOS 17.4.1. I had the same problem, CarPlay would not work after the update. I could not get any display from my phone applications on the infotainment screen. I tried rebooting the system, etc. Nothing worked.

But an online post said to try disconnecting the VPN. I did that and it worked. It appears that CarPlay will not start if you have your iPhone on a VPN when you first connect, but if the VPN is turned off, it will work. It will also work if you turn the VPN on after connecting. I was using Express VPN, version 11.145.0 9161716). tried multiple VPN locations and same result.

I hope this works for all.

So, I had this same issue after ios17. I have an Iphone 14 Pro and my carplay would connect, but every so often it would disconect with me having to reconnect it. I updated to ios 17.1.2 and my carplay completely stopped working. It wouldn't connect to the Iphone. I reached out to a Apple Representative and these steps helped me to fix my carplay on my 2021 Kia K5:

Try the following steps:

• Forget the stereo from Settings > General > CarPlay > [stereo name].

• Forget the iPhone from the settings (stereo user guide for instructions).

• Rename the iPhone in Settings > General > About > Name.

• Reset network settings on the iPhone.

After doing that:

If your car supports CarPlay with a USB cable, plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. The USB port might be labeled with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon. Be sure to use an Apple Lightning to USB cable.

• If your car supports CarPlay both wirelessly and with a USB cable, plug your iPhone into the USB port in your car. An alert on your iPhone will offer to connect you wirelessly on your next drives.

• If your car supports only wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel. Make sure that your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on. Then, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and select your car. Check your car manual for more information.

Hope this helps anyone having issues still within IOS17 or IOS 17.1.2

I finally got my iPhone 14 Pro to work in my 2018 Camaro 2SS 1LE by doing a reinstall using "Erase All Content and Settings" under General on the iPhone. After restoring data from iCloud and before connecting to my car, I REMOVED my phone from both the bluetooth menu in the car, AND as a previous device in CarPlay settings in the car. When I plugged it into the car again, it asked for permission to use it for CarPlay, and installed something, and it has worked since. iOS 17.1.2 has so many issues though - I still have problems with bluetooth either not connecting to headphones and speakers, or connecting and then cutting out constantly as if it's 50 yards away.

For all those who still have the issue I managed to solve it by doing a factory reset (not just reboot) in my car's unit and deleting the car from the iPhone, mine is and aftermarket android unit for BMW 530i so I went into settings and looked for factory reset it deletes all config and paired devices (it should be a similar option for everyone but how to find it would depend of your car's brand or model) then I delete DE car from carplay and also from Bluetooth devices on my iPhone (14 pro IOS 17.2) now with everything deleted when I pair the iPhone with my car it finally gets the popup asking for permisions to use carplay just select allow and now my carplay finally works again, hope this work for some of you I was stuck with "accessory not supported" for quite some time too, good luck.

I had this happen and I took it all the way up the apple support chain. THe firmware on the device car play device must be up to date. I have a sony car play and I had to install updated firmware, the instructions were on the sony website and it then started working again with the 17+ iOS.It took me a month to get this sorted out but apple only create iOS to match latest CarPlay firmware versions.

Update your car play firmware.
