CarPlay iOS17 not working

So since I did the iOS 17 update, CarPlay no longer works. I have reset the settings on my phone, my car, went through every step I found online and I have installed the most recent bug fix. So I am at a loss and I am assuming when my iPhone 15 Pro Max gets here today that I will still have the problem

Greetings Erklee102381,

To ensure that you're covering all the bases, the following steps may be able to provide you with some additional assistance:

"Check your wired or wireless connection and your iPhone settings

If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.

2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.

3. Restart your iPhone and your car.

4. Make sure that Siri is on.

5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Connect your iPhone with a USB-C connector to CarPlay with the USB-C to Lightning Adapter

You can use the USB-C to Lightning Adapter with wired CarPlay in most vehicles. However, some combinations of adapters, cables, and vehicle entertainment systems might disrupt the wired CarPlay connection. In this situation or for cars that support only wired CarPlay, use a direct connection with a USB cable.

- SOLUTION -

I've posted a number of various solutions in the past that were offered to me by the apple tech support and some of them worked for others, but none for me.

What worked this time for me, finally: my own CAR SETTINGS (or rather, RE-SETTINGS)

  • go into your car settings

  • find something like "factory reset radio"/ "factory reset media" / "factory reset apps"*

*I had seen factory reset before in my car, but I also had options (which I didn't see before) to reset various settings individually (rather than the WHOLE car factory reset). So I pressed factory reset: media, apps, radio, cable connection (anything I thought would have to do with the phone connection).

  • hold a breath and reconnect your phone to see if it worked!

So this did it for me, after 2+ hours back and forth communications with the Apple customer service and 3 or so months later.

NOTE: my car is Volkswagen GTI 2017

If it doesn't work, I feel your pain, I was there. See if any other solutions I had offered before help.

Apple CarPlay stopped working in one car the day after an iOS update. In another older car, it still worked. In the newer car, kept getting "accessory not supported" msg & the CarPlay icon on home screen was "greyed out" (disabled) despite USB cord & phone not having changed since day before when CarPlay worked.

Here is what worked for me to get Apple CarPlay working again although it require your car having a separate bluetooth music player function in order to work:

(1) The phone was not connected to the car with USB cord during this step:

Disconnected & then reconnected bluetooth connection from car to phone by going on the iPhone to BlueTooth, the "i" circle next to my car, and "Forget this Device" and then reconnecting it. Disconnected CarPlay as well by by going on the iPhone to General, CarPlay, MyCars and then clicking my car and "Forget this Car", but was not able to reconnect to CarPlay until Step 4 below because CarPlay icon was "greyed out."

This Step 1 may not be needed, but since I did do it, am including. Would suggest to skip this step & try 2, 3, 4 below and only if it doesn't work then come back and do Step 1.

I did also after Step 1 go into the older car and that is when I discovered that both Carplay & Bluetooth Music Player were still working fine in the older car. When I moved from the older working car back into the non-working car, the Bluetooth Music Player switched over automatically and started playing the music in the non-working car and that's how I accidentally discovered this fix:

(2) Used the bluetooth music player on my car home screen to play music using Spotify app on my phone. No USB cord connection still at this time. The music came in over the car speakers wirelessly.

(3) Once music was actually playing, only then plugged in the USB cord from phone to car.

(4) Now suddenly the phone was recognized and I could activate CarPlay normally, this is the point at which I re-established CarPlay that I had disconnected in Step 1. The music that had been playing via bluetooth wirelessly now switched to playing over CarPlay instead of wireless and other CarPlay functions like GoogleMaps were now working as well.

Another family member had a phone that also was suddenly not working with CarPlay in the newer car and this fix worked for them as well. They did also did do Step 1, but they never went into the older car.

After two weeks of not being able to get to work. I figured it out. I have a Kia Telluride, and here is what I did to fix it.

first step as many other suggested, is to reboot your infotainment system. For my car model there is a small reset button next to the volume control. I also changed out the cables and reset the infotainment system back to factory settings. None of that worked though. I also deleted everything out of my Bluetooth and out of CarPlay settings on my phone. The last thing I did today, which seems to have done the trick. Was go into settings, then general, then shut down, then slide to power off the phone. Then I waited about 20 seconds and powered it back up. All while the cable was still connected. When the phone fully came back up, a new CarPlay warning screen was on the infotainment center. clicked through that and unlocked my phone, now everything is working. Hope that helps someone.

Hey, I had the same issue on my ‘24 Denali. Updated to 17.2 and it would NOT work. Tried all the normal stuff and still wouldn’t work.

I finally had success. Unfortunately I did two things at once and don’t know which fixed it.

deleted my vehicle using the “forget” option in CarPlay (on the phone). Then I reset my wireless network settings. The later was a bit of a pain, but far less painful than resetting the entire phone and restoring.

Again, I’m not sure which was the cure, but it is working now. Good luck!

There is a chance, but if that should occur it's up to the car's maker to correct the issue as it means they did not properly program their head end.

Apple does not know how every auto maker and car stereo company programmed their device, and while it should continue to work, errors on the part of the auto/car stereo makers may cause it not to, and only those third parties can resolve it.

I often use this silly example, but pretend that when asked to add "2 + 3" your car calculates that as 5 but when asked to add "3 + 2" it calculates it as 6.

Even if Apple only used to add "2 + 3" in past versions of CarPlay and they now add "3 + 2," it's not Apple's responsibility to only add "2 + 3" from now on because someone else got it wrong in their system.

I had this issue tonight and messed around with it a little when I got home.. and what I did was turn off my VPN which I did activate earlier during my shift at work realizing it was off since I got the 15, and that fixed MY issue. So maybe if you have a vpn on turn it off? Maybe we can utilize this info and Apple can do something about it? I use express vpn.

I GOT IT TO WORK by disconnecting my phone from the infotainment center on the car: Settings, Phone, selected my phone, delete(or remove this device). Then on my iPhone 14 Pro: Settings, General, CarPlay, selected my Subaru, Forget this car. Then removed my Subaru from Bluetooth: Settings, Bluetooth, selected my Subaru, Forget this device. Then I turned my phone off and back on. Then I plugged it in to the cable in the car and I got the message to allow CarPlay from the phone, I selected Allow and it is working.

There appears to be a Subaru issue with using Bluetooth to connect the iPhone as then it has a mind of its own. It had the same issue with Pandora, now it plays Apple Music as soon as you connect to the car. I’ll stick to the hardwire!

Was able to fix wireless Carplay under iOS 17.4.1 by the following steps for Audi A3 2023:

  1. Unpaired iPhone from the car in Bluetooth settings
  2. Explicitly deleted the saved car's WiFi hotspot networks named "Audi_ MMI_XXXX" and "Audi_MMI_XXX_5Ghz" from iPhone (go to WiFi network's properties and tap "forget this network")
  3. Restarted iPhone
  4. Paired iPhone to the car via Bluetooth and enabled Carplay for the new pair
  5. Done

I have a 2022 Honda Odyssey, and my phone calls were not coming through the van. I tried all the things you guys did, such as resetting van settings and phone settings, but nothing worked. I checked my phone and found that I had the under Accessibility > Touch> Call Audio Routing set to speaker, and this was not allowing the van to connect to the call. Once I set this to Automatic, all my phone calls are now coming through the van.

This may not work for anyone else, but I wanted to share it. Check your phone settings; there might be one that is interfering with the car's functionality.

Good Luck
