CarPlay iOS17 not working

So since I did the iOS 17 update, CarPlay no longer works. I have reset the settings on my phone, my car, went through every step I found online and I have installed the most recent bug fix. So I am at a loss and I am assuming when my iPhone 15 Pro Max gets here today that I will still have the problem

Greetings Erklee102381,

To ensure that you're covering all the bases, the following steps may be able to provide you with some additional assistance:

"Check your wired or wireless connection and your iPhone settings

If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.

2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.

3. Restart your iPhone and your car.

4. Make sure that Siri is on.

5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Connect your iPhone with a USB-C connector to CarPlay with the USB-C to Lightning Adapter

You can use the USB-C to Lightning Adapter with wired CarPlay in most vehicles. However, some combinations of adapters, cables, and vehicle entertainment systems might disrupt the wired CarPlay connection. In this situation or for cars that support only wired CarPlay, use a direct connection with a USB cable.

Okay, so far on iPhone 13 Pro Max after iOS 17, 17.1.2 and 17.2 updates CarPlay doesn't work on 2021 SYNC3 Mustang, 2024 Opel SUV Hybrid in Europe, and on external screen device link with bluetooth. I can pair, verify, load data, but CarPlay never launches on vehicles. The first two say connected the third never indicates it's connected. Tried factory resets on all vehicles and external devices and clearing of CarPlay and Bluetooth Connections on iPhone, but still no CarPlay. Reset iPhone network connections, changed network access setting on iPhone as directed. Literally nothing works. So, I installed my wife's Apple 14 Pro with some version of iOS 16? on it and magically everything works on the same CarPlay devices.

So that essentially proves this is caused by iOS 17. If I had an iOS 16 backup, I'd revert, but unfortunately backup on iOS 16 started failing which is why I upgraded to iOS 17. It appears that Apple stopped testing software before launching, we're all beta testers.

Also have loaded latest firmware multiple times, so that's not the problem either.

I've also tried changing cables but that shouldn't have affected my wireless CapPlay connection device, so still iOS 17 issue.

I literally had to pull up an old iPhone mount and install on the front dash so I can navigator or borrow my wife's phone.

So Apple, please fix defective CarPlay on iOS 17 so we can stop wasting time and drive safety with handsfree.

To thise who have been unsuccessful with “powering off” the Infotainment system:

Did you hold the power off until it asks if you want to reboot?

I don’t believe it will work if you simply power off and power on.

admittedly this is what worked for a Honda. I don’t know about Toyota as it seems this is where most of the posts have come from.

It’s not just cables(I always connect by Bluetooth). I have an Apple 14 and a 2021 F-150 Lariat. Since the latest iOS update, CarPlay does not work properly. The main symptom is that when I turn the truck on, my phone appears to connect okay, but the large panel on the left where my Google map normally is and the upper panel on the right (I never use it but it has something to do with the microphone) show nothing but the Google logo. I then go into my phones Bluetooth settings for the truck, toggle off CarPlay and back on again. This appears to fix the problem, but in Bluetooth settings on my phone my truck still shows not connected, so it’s never connected, but after I do this CarPlay works. I have to do this every time I start my truck. I’ve called Ford 3 times - every time they walk me through a reset procedure that involves opening the door, hitting the lock, closing the door, and repeating a sequence of holding the power button and seek forward buttons until the panel restarts (I think I repeat this four times). It seems to fix the problem until I turn off the truck and restart it.

Basically, as Apple updating their software they start to disregard "older" car models. I was told that by an Apple representative on my call last evening.

However, I got 2 more suggestions:

  1. Try connecting another iphone to my car and see if the CarPlay works with that iphone. If it does, then my phone probably got a glitch while updating and may need a full factory reset.
  2. If it still doesn't solve the issue, then I may try my car's factory reset.

If nothing works, then basically Apple is saying that my car is too "old" for them to care for.

I have had some mixed progress. I found limited success with turning off my VPN. It’s not intuitive since my connections were Bluetooth or hardwire USB. Some CarPlay devices like Ford Sync and have a conflict with Hardwire USB and Bluetooth. To use their required Hardwire connection, you must not connect Bluetooth at any time. I bought two third party iPlay devices one uses Bluetooth, the other initially connects with Bluetooth and then connects through WIFI. Both of these worked right out of the box with VPN disabled and somehow at least temporarily reset the connection on the Ford and Sony devices. Since the iPlay devices are so easy to use and wireless I don’t use the other devices for anything than music.

That's because if it's due to your USB-C cable, they can't do anything about it.

Make sure your cable is a data rated USB-C cable before anything else.

Then make sure you delete your phone from your car and your car from your phone - reset your car's head unit to factory defaults if you've the ability and it's not too big a hassle.

Many have found a good cable in conjunction with creating an all new pairing does the trick.

Software updates such as this do not break older versions of software.

If you have a new car, more features may be available via CarPlay than in older cars or with older head ends (if they cannot be updated) but that in no way means CarPlay stops working in older vehicles.

One of the first troubleshooting steps should be to delete all traces of your current phone from your car head end's memory, and delete all references to your car's connection from your phone, allowing each to make a fresh association.

Finally, always check with your vehicle's maker as many do update their automotive head end systems regularly.

Beyond that, if you have an iPhone 15, you must use a USB-C cable and/or adapter rated to pass data, not just the voltage required to charge your device.
