How do I lock my watch during a workout? The Lock button is no longer there when I swipe right.

It appears the lock feature during a workout has gone away??

You have to start your workout FIRST.

To engage the lock, Press (but don't HOLD) the flat button (the one on the side flush with the case), scroll down to the water drop and press it. The water drop lights up. Then the screen automatically goes back to the screen you were at within your workout with the stats showing.

To disengage the lock, press and hold the crown button until it clears. Then you can swipe to pause or end the workout.

I do agree it is a silly change for the sake of change. No value add.

Great. How do I lock all the buttons so it isn’t calling the police when I crush the watch between my wrist and forearm in “push-up position”?

You can do 3 things.

A) turn on the Water Lock.

B) Extend the period of time needed to trigger Emergency Sevices

Getting the press and release timing just right can be an issue. You can make it more reliable by changing:

Apple Watch -> Settings -> Accessibility -> Side Button Click Speed

After changing this I never accidentally get the Emergency Services display.

“Side Button Click Speed” can adjust the press and release timing, so you get the Control Center display every time. Adjusting The "Side Button Click Speed" is also useful for Apple Pay’s double press and release. There is “Default” (sub second press and release timing needed), “Slow” (up to a second between press and release), and “Slowest” (up to 2 seconds between press and release). I like the “Slow” setting. And as I said, I do not accidentally get the wrong display.

NOTE: Slow and Slowest settings do not mean you have to wait a full second or 2 seconds between press and release. It just means you do not need to be super fast.

C) Change the orientation of your Apple Watch so the buttons are facing your elbow and not your wrist, then use

Apple Watch -> Settings -> General -> Orientation

to change the internal software so the watch face is not upside down.

FYI: It is difficult to actually press the flat oval side button. The Digital Crown, because it sticks out, is easy to press, but that flat oval side button, no so much

I have the pretty silly process.

Start your workout.

To engage the lock, Press the flat button, scroll down to the water drop and press it. The screen automatically goes back to the screen you were at.

To disengage the lock, press and hold the crown button until it clears.

I’m not sure what prompted them to change this process but it does work.

Maybe they needed to show the value of having a flat button?

Thanks for your help!

Since it is a frequent activity, you can scroll to the end, tap the "Edit" button and re-arrange the Control Center icons so that the water drop 💧 icon is near the top, so no scrolling needed.

As to why. I'm sure at least the team that has to read the feedback about the swipe left/right/up changes are shaking their heads about now, if not some of the other Apple people that have to deal with customers.

You can send Apple feedback via:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch

If enough users send feedback, it is more likely a decision maker will see it, and maybe take action.

You can use the water lock, that disables all touch action.

How to use Water Lock and eject water from your Apple Watch - Apple Support

A quick press and release of the flat oval side button will bring up the Control Center, with the water lock icon 💧

Use Control Center on Apple Watch - Apple Support

DO NOT hold the button, as that brings up Emergency services and the power off icon.

I understand entirely and can 100% assure you that it works for me...

The key point is that you need to lock the screen whilst in the app. I imagine you are in an actiity and then press the crown button returning to the clock screen, then go the control panel and lock the that screen.

You need to press the side button well showing the stats or whatever you want, then press the water drop icon and it will lock the workout screen.

I suppose there's a chance you have a really old version of the watch or something that this doesn't work with, I've got a 6 which has an always-on display, so I guess that might be relevant.

No this is the same problem of this thread, I don't believe you understood their point. I went hiking today, realized the lock button was gone from the workout screen. If you lock it from the control center area the watch just shows you the clock face. People usually lock their watches during a workout so a button doesn't get accidentally pressed that screws up the recorded workout. But when the face is locked you want to see the stats of your workout screen stats when you glance at the watch during the workout, when the watch is locked now this is not an option. Despite having so much money it doesn't appear as if the company does any testing in real world scenarios because this would have been a registered bug.

Apple seems to want you to use Siri. The easiest way I have found is turn on the water lock in the Control Center. Then use Siri to start a workout. It counts down and starts the workout and the workout app is now on the Home Screen of the watch. Tell Siri to stop the workout and it stops the workout and unlocks the water lock without having to go back to the Control Center. This only seems to work for the Apple Watch Workout App. You also can't use Siri to water lock or unlock your watch which is definitely illogical.
