AirPods not pairing after updating to iOS 17

Is anyone else having problems with AirPods after the iOS 17 update? Since updating iOS, my AirPods Pro (1st gen) won’t give the connected notification when putting them in my ears. My iPhone pro max 13 shows them as connected but when I play music, it comes out of the phone speaker. There’s an option to airplay it to my AirPods, but it fails to connect when I select this.

removing the AirPods from my device and then reconnecting them temporarily fixes the problem. But then when leaving them and returning to them, the problem returns.

Apple customer services want £249 to repair them, but it’s probably cheaper to buy a new pair.

any thoughts greatly appreciated on how to fix more permanently

Same here, AirPod max. They show connected to my iPad and/or iPhone but sound comes out of phone/ipad. The only way I can use them is to factory reset and then they work fine until I stop using them. If I then pick them up 15 mins later, need to reset. Tried rebooting everything, reset network settings on devices, same result. Clearly a software issue.

UPDATE to my own post, one month later: I was able to connect the AirPods Max to the Mac a few days later, but it feels like this latest iOS has had so many hiccups with its bluetooth connection, especially the way that Apple devices talk to each other, it's almost like it stepped back YEARS.

I have the headphones connected to the MacBook Pro beside me listening to something while working on iMac - even though I disconnect the headphones from the iMac and I move the sound to the iMac speakers, every time there is a ping or notification, the headphones move to the iMac, even though I change all settings to move away from them.

Another example is the same as randyfrompinckney below, the bluetooth connection just drops out of the blue, and either I can't connect to the headphones even though it shows connected, or they completely disappear as one of the options. I need to do a hard reset of the headphones in order to have it recognized, and sometimes it takes up to 5 mins to have it work successfully. And this can happen several times a day.

I look forward to this software issue being fixed because it is driving us nuts.

Here here! I’m having the very same problem. I can only hear through one of my Air Pods since the update the other day. I’ve read some of the other comments and I must say…you guys are far more gracious and noble in voicing your discontent. I haven’t gone as far to make inquiry about this with Apple yet, but, reading the other comments about how others have been told that they will have to fork over $249, or whatever amount is, frankly, insulting, to say the least. One of the richest companies in the world, if not the richest, unwilling to rectify the situation they caused! Why I outta!!! To the moon, Alice! To the moon!🤬
