PASSWORD INCORRECT FOR RESTORING UNENCRYPTED BACKUP - Just backed up ipad and did an update. Tried to restore and it's asking for password but I am 100% sure I did not encrypt the backup.

I just backed up my ipad to my PC and also did an update. Not sure what went wrong but my ipad is basically at a factory reset. I went to restore from backup, the one I JUST completed and I am 100% sure it did NOT ask me for a password to encrypt the backup. It keeps asking me for a password and I've tried all my recent ones and nothing works. My itunes settings doesn't have the box checked for encrypted backups either so I don't understand why it's still asking me for a password. I even tried uninstalling itunes and re-installing, and restarting my computer too - nothing seems to work. Can anyone help of have work arounds? Thanks!

iTunes will not ask you for a password every time you backup the iPad. (Only the initial backup.) iTunes will ask you for a password every time you restore the backup on your iPad. You must have set a password some time in the past. See:

If you can’t remember the password for your encrypted backup - Apple Support

PS - You get an unlimited number of tries for the password. Keep guessing.

See Disable iOS backup encryption - Apple Community. In particular:

If you have forgotten the password, or were not aware that encryption had been enabled, consider that it might be any computer, Apple ID, Wi-Fi password or device PIN that you've used in the past, working from the assumption that you might have reused a common password that you were using when encryption was first activated. See About encrypted backups on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support for details.

When you say initial backup is that the first time I setup my itunes acct or do you know if it asks for a new password for each new device? Trying to take walk down memory lane for when it would've initially asked the password. I've tried 143 passwords so far :( - still no luck.

Do you also know if there's any way to transfer the file to my icloud acct and be able to restore it that way? I would assume the file type is different for how it saves down for a PC vs. icloud but I'm desperate for options here.

I did reset to hopefully avoid the encrypted versions for next time, but since during the backup my ipad ended back to factory settings I can't even just re-backup.

Thank you!!!
