What is rosetta?

I want to download some apps on my MacBook but these apps say I need to download Rosetta. Will it slow down my MacBook when I downloaded rosetta?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.6

The first time that you run an application using Rosetta, there will be a delay while Rosetta translates the code. (Once it translates the code, it saves a copy of the translation for future use.)

An application run in translation using Rosetta will generally run slower than one built for Apple Silicon. But the translator does a good job – and for many applications, the bottleneck is the reaction time of the person sitting behind the keyboard, rather than the speed at which the CPU can run the translated code.
