iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

I hadn't experienced any noticeable heat issues with my iPhone 15 Pro until today. I purchased the iPhone 15 Pro and restored it from an iCloud backup four days ago.

Today, when I picked up the phone from my desk after not using it for some time, I noticed that it felt warmer to the touch. This seemed a bit odd, but I didn't think too much about it at the time. Not long afterward, I realized that my battery was draining faster than usual. Now, I believe this may be due to whatever is causing the heat issue. Shortly after plugging the phone in to charge, I saw the 'Charging On Hold' message.

I'm not complaining as much as I'm hoping this information may be useful in finding a solution from Apple. I understand that four days may seem like a long time for indexing, but considering the amount of data on modern iPhones, it's quite a task. To put it in perspective, there's now 75 times more data on my phone than the total storage capacity of the desktop computer I had back in sixth grade, five years before the first iPhone was released. Apple has only had four days of data with any real sample size. I have confidence they will find a solution soon.

mine is iPhone Pro. same heating issues. experimented with different chargers, seems the usb c to usb c does it more than usb a charger. but still... I think it was in middle of ios17.0.2 update at night where apple logo started flashing and going into a restart loop... no good.

was fine for first 48 hrs since purchase.

now it's taking forever to restore from iCloud .... estimated 7 hours (despite having highest speed from xfinity ).....

Bought my 15pro on 9/22 and have been facing the heating issue whenever on calls. Also drains battery significantly when its hot. Just got off phone with Apple support. They ran a diagnostic and said everything is fine on the results. Did not acknowledge this is an issue. Asked me to take it to the carrier for replacement if problem persists. So disappointed.

I got my iPhone 15 Pro on launch day. I've noticed it gets way hotter when charging than my 13 Pro. Hot enough that I wouldn't want to touch/hold it for long.

It was on my Otterbox Magsafe charging stand this morning for maybe 20 mins and it was extremely hot.

I was just on a phone call inside in AC for 40 mins on speaker with the screen brightness around 50% googling and looking at emails and it again got super hot to the touch.

My 13 Pro never got anywhere close to how hot my 15 Pro is getting.

My iPhone 15 pro still gets uncomfortably hot. It finished indexing yesterday and it’s still an issue. If their solution is to reduce the performance of the phone will there be the option of a full refund even if this solution comes outside of the 14 day window?

Apple needs to offer full replacement as well once the fix is in. By their own admission elevated temperatures above 98 can permanently damage the battery of your phone. Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple

I got mine through Sky so mine is going back and a new one sent out. It’s been a real pain as I’ve had to cancel this contract and take out a fresh one. If I have the same problem, I’ll be cancelling and looking for something else. I could understand if I was running a game and/or videos but it’s just when I make calls. Within 5 minutes it’s really hot and just depletes the battery.

Apple can’t fix the issue if it’s a hardware or design problem, other than potentially making a manufacturing change for future device batches.

If there is a bug or errant process causing the CPU to overwork, then that can be fixed with an update. If some component is drawing excess power and causing it to heat up, that might be able to be fixed in firmware with an update. Otherwise, Apple can only reduce the clock speed of the CPU to reduce heat being generated and improve device thermals, which would have a negative effect on the performance of the device.
