I disconnected my apple watch (AW) from my old phone, tried to connect it to my new one and it needs to be updated first. Tried reconnecting with my old phone, and my husband's, and it wont connect. Also tried updating from the AW but it prompts me to agree to the terms on my phone, which I can no longer connect to.

I was having this exact issue all day! While transferring my data from an old iPhone to the new iPhone 15 Pro, my watch "froze" in the process of transferring, and thereafter wouldn't connect to my new phone. I repeatedly tried to connect as both a new and existing watch but was never successful. By this point, I'd already wiped and turned off my old phone, so my top priority was to not have to turn it back on and confirm my watch data was off of it. Without going back into my old phone, the solution that worked for me was:

These steps worked for me today when I upgraded from Iphone 12 to Iphone 15 Pro Max. Resetting the Apple Watch was the crucial piece to allow me to connect the Apple Watch Ultra 2 to my new Iphone. Other techniques on Youtube weren't as successful.

This process worked for me except that I had to pair it manually once both devices were powered off and on and the watch was reset. Not a problem, of course. Just glad to have the watch paired to the new phone! Many thanks.

After much frustration in trying to pair my new Apple IPhone 15 Pro with my iPhone watch 8, I decided to try the instructions from cmayer52. I was nervous about doing the reset on my watch, but it all worked!!! Thank you! One caveat: for the reset, do the erase and keep plan. Good luck!
I was going to use the method above from cmayer52, to reset my watch, but when I went into settings I saw my old Iphone 12 as well as my new Iphone 15. I clicked on the 15 and they finally paired. It took the watch above 6 minutes to pair, but this might work better than resetting the watch.
The reset on my apple watch says "Erase all content and settings". I don't want to erase all content and settings - is there any other way to work around this issue of iPhone 15 not 'recognizing' the watch to pair?
I’m a 56 y/o that is not super tech savvy, and have the same issue ashile293, and cmayer52 describe. Idk where he went on his iphone15 to make the pairing process work with his watch. Hopefully i’ll stumble ipon it somewhere on my phone. I have the iphone 15 Pro Max, which i guess is the same set up as the other 15 models. Anyway, if i knew where to look, (maybe in my apps,) I can try as cmayer52 had and was successful. The info is very appreciated, and helpful, thanks for sharing your remedy cmayer52!

Pain in the you know what
You have to go to phone and do hard reset keep plan. Then do another pair through phone watch app
You have to go to watch and do hard reset keep plan. Erase all content data. Then do a pair through phone watch app again.

Stupid question: How do you turn off your Apple Watch?
Confirmed this works - 1) Reset watch 2) Re-pair to iPhone
Keep holding the button bellow the crown.
It will show you several options and on top right the power button icon.
Click on it and slide to turn off.
