PAGES Shift+Return Keystroke for soft return no longer working

With the newest update to Pages, the Shift+Return shortcut to inserting a soft return is no longer working. I've used PAGES since the beginning, it appears to be a software bug. Any help???

It seems Control+Return is now being used by Pages as the new key combination for Insert Line Break / Soft Return. What we want is for it to move back to Shift+Return. And sadly the Keyboard Shortcuts settings will not accept Shift+Return for Insert Line Break.

I find this particular feature really annoying because some apps do SHIFT+ENTER, some do CTRL+ENTER and some do both. It's even worse because the current Mac version of Excel requires x to get soft returns in a cell!

returns within Excel cells have always been that way, since decades.

Yes, I reported it.

Yes, I hope all here report it. Sadly too few in this community do report, or, Apple doesn't listen at all. Sometimes it seems like this Apple "community" is the "no department" at an insurance company, meant to placate all but the most staunch complainers.

Yeah, I know Excel's been its own thing for a while. It'd be kinda cool if someone would've agreed this before there were a million different platforms and apps who needed this functionality...but yeah. I use Excel almost every day too in a text-heavy way, and still screw this up because it's different than everybody else that I use more... 🤣

It's been FIVE MONTHS. How is this still an issue? Apple's lack of attention to Pages / Keynote / Numbers is infuriating.

Does Apple EVER pay attention to the "community? This Apple relationship reminds me of the "always say no department" at insurance companies. Only the most contrarian curmudgeonly humans push through.

Cells in spreadsheets everywhere have always had different rules, they're cells after all, one expects computations to take priority over text... like how many people know to start a cell with an apostrophe to turn off computation when using a dash to start a line?

But at least option-return are near buttons, so a one-hand action, and about 70% as easy as shift-return, mechanically speaking! 🤣 ( I don't know how to do smiley faces here, so I just copied yours.)

True!

For me, I touch type—so much so that I have an external ThinkPad keyboard with the pointing stick so I don't have to move my hands from the home row... ;)

So for me, CTRL+ENTER or SHIFT-ENTER is still a two-handed operation, so I don't have the issue many have on this thread. It's just more annoying to have to remember to move down an extra row than anything.

Actually, until I read so many replies, it had never occurred to me that it would be a one-handed operation as the appeal. But, if you don't touch-type, I get it.

And I just used the emoji & symbols keyboard thing in the menu bar to get the emojis since I'm not on the phone. Not nearly as slick as on the mobile, but I need that for remembering all the international option commands since I work in cross-language environments.

Interesting! (I'm an old school typist, writing some 70 words per minute)

I have no emoji menu bar in composing this?

The emoji thing on the desktop is an option under keyboards I think. You can enable something like “show symbols and emoji in menu”.

its a little flaky for the last 5 years or so, because it gets tied to an app, and can only attach to one at a time, so you have to manually close it. However, I find it handy for a variety of situations. I even enable the Unicode keyboard too so I can use some strange symbol font char codes like the Bootstrap icon fonts in normal apps.

Replying on my phone this time, so emojis are easy! 🤣🤣🤣
