I can't change my iPhone Apple ID 'Apple ID is not valid or not supported'

My cellphone has an appleid that is invalid. Don't recall using the id but I cannot do anything that requires the apple id and pw on my phone. I created a new Id, on the laptop but am unable to use it on the phone due to the existing issue.
