Notification indicator not showing on Apple Watch (red dot) also nothing showing in the Notification Centre on Apple Watch

i have an Apple Watch Series 6 - paired with an iPhone 11. Ever since I updated my iPhone to IOS 17 and Watch to IOS 10. Notifications on Apple Watch have not been working.

When my iPhone is locked I receive haptic alerts on my Apple Watch, (vibrates) however there is no red indicator on my watch face and nothing is showing in the Notification Centre on my watch. when I open my phone notifications form messages/app are there.

I have gone through a whole list of trouble shooting to resolve this and nothing has worked.

1) unpaired and repaired using back up

2) unpaired and repaired as new watch

3) hard reset

4) updated iPhone and Watch to latest 17.1 and 10.1 - hoping they released a fix for this issue

5) cleaned my watch with warm water (was a little dirty but no problems before the update)

6) changed my watch strap - to a smaller one

7) turned all notifications off - restarted both iPhone and Watch, then turned notifications back on

8) spoke to Apple support over the phone and senior tech support

9) I do have vpn on my phone not that it should affect this, but I uninstalled this from my phone. Still didn’t work

The only way I found for my Watch to work correctly is to turn off wrist detection. Notification indicator shows (red dot) and notifications shows in the Notification Centre. However I then lose all the background tracking HR etc which I have come to rely on.

has anyone else experienced any issues with this? - Apple support have said they have now escalated this after to speaking to around 5 people.

may seen a small issue but it is a big inconvenience especially as I have device that is not working as expected and I can’t downgrade

Hi, thanks for your initial advice. I thought I would let you know I found a fix for my issue. Given how you post a lot in the forum thought I would share in case you come around another post with a user facing this issue

Managed to find a fix now Apple Watch works. Not sure if they changed the parameters in the update to IOS 10 and 10.1. But try this and let me know.

on your iPhone go to settings -notifications - under notification style go into each app individually and if not currently selected under alerts tick Notification Centre.

after I ticked Notification Centre alerts came through to my Apple Watch. Previously before the update to iOS 10 I just had banners selected only for all apps which didn’t affect me receiving notifications on my watch. So neither I or Apple support picked this up.

hope it helps

I would encourage you to also submit feedback to Apple so they work on resolving it for a future update: Feedback - Watch - Apple FWIW My series 7 works on notifications

From the Support link: Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you don't see notifications on your Apple Watch

When your devices disconnect, your notifications go to your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch. To check your connection in Control Center, press the side button (for watchOS 9 or earlier, touch and hold the bottom of the screen, then swipe up). If your devices are disconnected, you might see the red iPhone icon , the red X icon , or the Wi-Fi icon Try to connect your iPhone and Apple Watch.

When your Apple Watch locks or you turn on Do Not Disturb, your notifications go to your iPhone:

  • When your Apple Watch is locked, the lock icon  appears on the watch face.
  • When Do Not Disturb is on, the Do Not Disturb icon  appears on the watch face. To turn this feature off, swipe up on the watch face, then tap the Do Not Disturb button .

For third-party apps, notifications are delivered only if your paired iPhone is also connected to a network

Not 100% sure this is a fix yet. We did notice that upon upgrade to IOS 17, the default texttone value in the iPhone settings for Messages was set to "None" (not by us, it happened as part of the upgrade).

We have also noticed a significant lag between the time the iPhone receives the message and the time the iWatch displays a notification (e.g., 45+ seconds).

I tried more of the suggestion and none of the standard things work.

Restarting watch fails to fix

Restarting phone fails to fix

Unpairing and restoring phone fails to fix

It is not a focus settings issue

It is not a notifications settings issue

It is not because the phone is in use

etc.

Basically Apple provided a defective update, and as usual, refuses to acknowledge it.

As such, the watch is practically useless and a pain since the notifications are silenced on the phone since the phone thinks the watch is making them, which it is not. This is not the only issue either. The options seletced on my watch face are not matching those set on the phone and are not always being displayed either (but are acted upon with screen touch).

Time to turn off the watch.
