Apple Watch Battery Drain Issues after Update

Since updating to WatchOS 10.0.1, the watch battery charges only to 80% overnight and the battery drains more quickly than before the update. I also updated my iPhone 14 pro to iOS 17 around the same time. Would this impact the watch battery?

Here’s my situation today:

  • wake up at 6 am: watch is at 100%
  • get in car at 7:20 am: watch is at 91%
  • sit motionless for four hours
  • at 11:30, walk around for approximately two hours (no workout being tracked)
  • sit motionless for another two hours
  • by 3:30 pm, watch is at 56%, having only been looked at 6-7 times. There were no functions engaged, only one alert shown, no workouts tracked, and WiFi is turned off.
  • since I have to leave the office at 4 and drive for about 3 hours, I fully expect that by 7:30 pm tonight my watch will be dead, having not done anything at all today.

I have updated my phone OS also.

Before this update, my watch lasted until 12 am-1 am, which included a minimum 2 hours of workout tracking and many activations.

this is an utter joke. Nobody can use a watch that can’t last 10 hours even when it’s not tracking anything.

I called today Apple support reguarding the problem with quick battery draining.

On the phone run the Diagnostics and Apple support agent said my battery health is 74% and that Apple considers that under 80% should have battery replaced.

The cost of this replacement is 99£.

The agent wasn’t able to answer my question reguarding the quick battery drain.

I lost 26% of health battery but how was possible that the same watch was able to work for a full day and now after the update can hold only 3 hours and a half.

Something is wrong and I believe is a software issue.

The agent said through Diagnostics cannot tell me if an app is guilty of the quick draining of the battery.

Should I unpair the watch and set it as new watch?

Could that help?

Thank you

My Apple Watch Ultra has battery life issues, also. Just after the 10.2 update, my battery life was nearly 60 hours. The next battery life cycle was in the 40-hour range, and the next in the 24-hour range. I've lost count of the number of charging/discharging cycles, but this current cycle is going to be under 10 hours. The battery life issue appeared in my first Ultra and is now in the replacement Ultra. Usage and settings are fairly consistent over time, so I'm not introducing too many variables. Version 10.1 had a similar lift with a gradual reduction in the battery life.

Like many of the others who replied, expectations from Apple in general, and specifically for the Ultra series, is the battery life should be exceptional, longer term, and consistent. Removing and limiting normal usage to improve a fundamental issue is pushing the fix/workaround out to the installed base... which is not desired or expected from Apple.

My problem arose with watchOS 10.2.

SOLVED: I did a complete reset of my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and did not restore from a backup.

It is now working fine with reasonable battery drain.

Before this I unsuccessfully had tried: unpairing and repairing with my iPhone, reducing notifications from the iPhone to the apple watch, and disabling double tap (all suggestions offered somewhere in the community).

Your mileage may differ.

Since the really annoying update, Apple Watch is slower to charge and drains really quickly when tracking workouts. I used to have at least 30% left after 18 holes of golf. Now it will barely complete 9 holes, so doesn’t track half my calories nor steps. Not at all happy about this. Activity rings keeps asking me stupid questions. It used to be SOOOO simple and efficient. Now it’s just a pain. Apple. Fix this. Now.

This is fuc... joke. After 10.3.1 update in the evening my Apple Watch was 100% charged - I went to sleep with Apple Watch on my wrist as I do since years. During the night apparently battery completely drained with red bolt!

Of course I failed to be waked up as watch was dead!

Is QA working at apple at all ? WTF is going on with apple software quality ?!

Woke up at 6.3am with 100% battery on my Apple Watch, it’s now 7.45am and it’s 69% battery. In that time, I’ve done a moderate 30min walk and had breakfast. I did the iOS 10.3.1 update 2 days ago and since then my Apple Watch battery has been draining so fast, why???! This is my first Apple Watch (purchased in Sept 2023) and have encountered battery charge issues before/after every recent update, maybe I should have stayed with Fitbit!!!!! This is so frustrating, please sort it out Apple!!!

No. The point of the forum is to allow Apple users that like to help, give help to fellow users.

Apple’s involvement is very minimal. They maintain the forum software. Users can report posts to moderators to request editing out personal information. Users can report content that violates the terms of service everyone clicked “Agree”, but never read.

And if a question goes unanswered for too long, then an Apple forum moderator will post pointers to some maybe related Apple technical articles that may or may not be useful. They do not really interact with the user.

But the small forum team is over worked just keeping “The Wheels on the Bus” so to speak in maintaining the forum environment.

So no, Apple developers and Apple decision makers do not read these forums for feedback.

Apple does provide several ways to provide feedback.

Product Feedback - Apple

Or you could get a free Apple Developer Account, and file a bug report.

Indirectly, interactions with the Genius Bar employees, and Apple Support may result in those employees passing along issues they are seeing over and over again.

I encourage you to send your Apple Watch feedback to
