Apple Watch Battery Drain Issues after Update

Since updating to WatchOS 10.0.1, the watch battery charges only to 80% overnight and the battery drains more quickly than before the update. I also updated my iPhone 14 pro to iOS 17 around the same time. Would this impact the watch battery?

Here’s my situation today:

  • wake up at 6 am: watch is at 100%
  • get in car at 7:20 am: watch is at 91%
  • sit motionless for four hours
  • at 11:30, walk around for approximately two hours (no workout being tracked)
  • sit motionless for another two hours
  • by 3:30 pm, watch is at 56%, having only been looked at 6-7 times. There were no functions engaged, only one alert shown, no workouts tracked, and WiFi is turned off.
  • since I have to leave the office at 4 and drive for about 3 hours, I fully expect that by 7:30 pm tonight my watch will be dead, having not done anything at all today.

I have updated my phone OS also.

Before this update, my watch lasted until 12 am-1 am, which included a minimum 2 hours of workout tracking and many activations.

this is an utter joke. Nobody can use a watch that can’t last 10 hours even when it’s not tracking anything.

Had a call with Support today - they recommendet to me to wait another week…. What else could I do :D

And they did some check on my watch (I think, they just collected logs) and saw that my battery had 79% health and suggested to replace it, if my watch won‘t recover within the next week.

Let me think.. either my watch had 100% battery health (16 hrs. duration) before the update and it - coincidently - dropped to 79% (3 hrs. duration) after the watchOS update… then I would be curious to learn the math, where 20% of 16 hrs. are 13 hrs., while 80% are 3 hrs.

In the other scenario the watch battery had about 80% before the update and lastet 16 hrs. and has 79% after the update and lasts now 3 hrs.

All this points to the update / software draining the batteries and won‘t get better, if I would replace the battery for 120€ as suggested.

I assume the watch would last 3.5 hrs with a new battery, I will lack the money and still can throw it into the duster.

Btw. today the watch died during my workout, after 44:37 minutes. It sucks…

Same here, but Apple Watch 7, no GPS. Mine only charges to 75%, and by bedtime it’s down to 20%. Before I installed 10.0.1 the charge never dropped below 80% — and now I can’t even get it charged to 80%! I saw a comment here that the battery drain rate usually returns to normal a few days after you install an OS update. That has most definitely not been the case for me. Apple needs to fix this. Having to put my watch on a charger twice a day is not acceptable.

Apparently this is the new normal.

I estimate that the battery drain rate on my Series 5 has roughly doubled since watchOS 10 was installed. I don't want to spend hours on the phone with support only to be told that I need to buy a new watch, as obviously this problem is new to the OS update and lots of folks with much newer watches than my own are having the same problem.

I was experiencing the same problem, and I had also noticed that it lost connection with my phone. It was only connecting through the cellular data. So here’s what I did I unpaired the watch then I repaired the watch to the phone. I selected a different back update not the most recent one. Now I’m just going back to US cellular to have them reactivate my cellular plan on my watch. But the battery drain now is a whole lot better.
