FWIW, I had no problem downloading the file from the BBC site on more than one Mac running Big Sur and later. Tried Firefox and Safari.

Where did you download it from? I downloaded the dmg file from Softpedia and the only installation involved was to drag the app from the dmg image into the Applications folder. I can't actually use it because I'm not in the UK.
at times download becomes corrupted, and problem you experience might just be when you try to download it once more rather than getting a new download from the site, you just get your isp's cached file you just downloaded which is corrupt, their caceh will expire at a bit.
I downloaded version 2.13.16.dmg from the BBC web site.
That is the file that isn't working.
I've tried downloading it several times.
I agree that installation should have been easy.
