iPhone 15 Pro Max Back Glass Durability

Hello, I’m interested in purchasing an iPhone 15 pro max, I have seen online that this model breaks very easily (back glass breaks with minimal pressure- JerryRigsEverything video). Has anyone else experienced this?

I disagree.

In his videos, he compared it to the iPhone 14, same tests. Significant difference in durability. In fact, the 14 did not break and with more pressure.

Yes, it was deliberately destroyed, 1 test at a time… I’m unaware how else you’d test durability. However, the first test was the back glass. The rest of the tests followed, and most praised.

A LOT of other videos have emerged as well. Popular Mac forums have published articles too. Same observations, and more with the camera falling off after a decent fall. Never in the history of iPhones has this happened, under extreme falls (Off Rooftops).

Pure speculation; I believe it’s a design flaw related to the back glass now being removable, and it will probably be fixed on the iPhone 16.

OP:

If you still get the 15… you’ll probably like it. But take extra precautions. Like a lanyard 😂.

My opinion, find an iPhone 14. It will cost less, performance comparisons are negligible (see tests online), and it has superior durability.

One thing to note, is the titanium frame generally has less flex than previous materials. So it's likely also the back glass is flexing more than the frame, and causing it to be under more stress when bent in this way, and therefore break in Jerry's video. It's possible that previous phones that use a steel or aluminium border frame have more flex and move with the glass, and the stress is more evenly distributed. The titanium also should increase durability on side impacts.

In any case, it's extremely unlikely it will break under normal use, especially if you have a case. Jerry was using a considerate amount of force directly in one small area, in the middle of the phone, which is unlikely to happen in a normal scenario.

I have just got my 15 Pro Max, and have absolutely no concerns over this. Look after your phone and you won't have an issue. And as you know, the back glass is much cheaper to have replaced this time.

Don't hesitate, the average user isn't going to break their phone. 1) the average user will have a case on their phone. 2) He's putting pressure on the back glass with his thumbs. Yes it broke but they also specifically said they made it more modular and easier to repair the back glass.

This "influencer" literally buys phones, and destroys them and makes videos for clicks. Again your average user isn't going to do anything like this, and likely won't have any issues, and if you do there's Apple Care. In all my years of having iPhones I have broken 2 phones, both as a result of bone headed moves on my part.

My iPhone 15 Pro Max’s back broke after just one week. It didn’t fall or suffer any impact. This is surprising since I’ve owned almost every model, and this has never happened before.

This is the first iPhone I’ve had this type of situation with since my iPhone 6, which broke due to a fall. I believe the quality of the iPhone 15 might be lacking.

Additionally, the battery doesn’t last the whole day, unlike my previous iPhone.

I totally agree with your observation of people’s lack of details in their comments. It’s hard for me to understand how and/or why anyone would even bother offering their opinion, if they are not willing to try and help the cause (TRULY “help”), by providing DETAILS of their personal experience.

i have previously posted more details about my 15 PM breakage in the comments, but I just wanted to encourage you to put a screen protector on the BACK of your phone too. (Yes.. the back, in addition to a case.) Even then, you will probably want to tie a rabbits foot to it for good luck.

I never egregiously dropped my phone in the 3 weeks I had it. I was at the gym one day and decided to take the case off real quick to clean it. When I did, I found the BACK of the phone was shattered.

if Apple is not forthcoming about this “Titanium Egg-shell” and help its victims recoup their losses - it would truly not shock me to see this become a CA lawsuit.

I don’t recommend this product.

I have never had a screen crack on me like this.

i was skeptical of the reviews and comments saying it cracked easy and thought well I’m more careful. I should be fine.

its not the case. It does crack easy.

I accidentally dropped it at a three foot height, (my husband said it’s 2 1/2 feet) with screen protector and a good reviewed and well known case on a dirt field and it immediately cracked. It did not land on any rocks. It landed on dirt on its back . And it cracked in multiple places all over the front screen.

i have never had this happened with any other phone before, ever. I have never cracked any phone, watch, iPod.

if you do decide to get this phone be aware, that even with a case, if you drop it, it will crack.

i believe the reviews that people are cracking it with less like having it in their purse or it dropping on the counter.

get it with the care plan or get a completely different phone.

I can see how that is misleading. It’s not stretching, it’s flexing. And being partially aluminum makes it worse. The glass is in contact with the aluminum, the titanium is the outer half of the frame as well.

“However, while titanium is stronger it's also a little more flexible, and that along with the move from a vertical to a curved edge appears to have removed some of the shock-absorbing properties of the iPhone 14 Pro's stainless steel band.”

“Titanium has the added challenge of being more flexible than most machined materials compared to its hardness, so care must be taken to fixture it as rigidly as possible.”

It’s definitely weaker then the other iPhone because my old iPhones back glass never cracked even after the years I’ve dropped it and stuff, my new iPhone 15 pro max broke 2 days after I got it. The back glass is super sensitive I barely dropped it from my bed and it cracked really bad. I got a case for it and I checked it just now and I don’t even drop my phone that much and there is more cracks in the back glass which seemed to have happened through the case, which never has happened with any other iPhones so yea, the back glass is super sensitive so get a case for sure

In less than one month, the back of my IPhone 15 Pro Max shattered. I had it in a Rokform $70 case, tempered glass screen protector on the front; plastic camera protector on the back; tempered glass cover over the logo on the back.

Sure, I dropped the phone... like everyone does, but not once was it from a height over 4ft. I have never had this happen to any phone I've owned, with or without a case or screen protector on it.

Quite honestly, I think Apple should take responsibility for this - as it is clearly a design flaw. Fortunately, I was paying for hardware protection via Verizon, and it "only" cost me $99 to get a new one; however, the time involved in this fix was absurd. The phone calls, insurance claim, etc, took me at least 4 hours.

I completely regret buying mine not only was it as much as my monthly rent but it’s completely shattered on the back and I have no idea how. I am careful with it. I have a case and screen protector on it and it is shattered. Honestly I do not recommend this phone at all. I have had 6 iPhones before this and nothing like this has ever happened even when they are out of cases. I’m so angry

It did just break in my purse. I went from my house to the supermarket. It didn’t fall and it didn’t hit at anything. I send the picture of the purse/bag. There was 3 phones inside. Only mine without a case and was between the other 2 silicone phone cases.

when I took it out in the supermarket it was broken. I have iPhones for a long time. They fall a lot and I never broke anything before. This one was without a case because the cases didn’t get to the shops yet but I was being very careful!!
